According to the 2,300-year-old writings of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, the city of Atlantis existed about 9,000 years before his time. It was an advanced civilization with many structures, including temples and giant statues. However, Atlantis mysteriously disappeared more than 11,000 years ago. Photo: Shutterstock/Javier Hermoso.

"There's a guy called Michael Donnellan... And he thinks he's found, if not Atlantis, at least part of it off the coast of Spain. They've definitely found something in these waters," said independent researcher Ben. Photo: Michael Donnellan.

Independent archaeologist Donnellan said the descriptions in Plato's work matched new discoveries of ruins, prehistoric settlements and ancient mines in the Gades region. This is the strongest evidence yet of an Atlantic civilization. Photo: National Geographic.

These discoveries , which include underwater structures and sediment-covered sites suggesting sudden destruction, fit Plato's accounts of the climate, social structure and ancient myths about the city of Atlantis. Photo: historicaleve.

Michael found submerged ruins along the coast around Cádiz, a city in Andalusia. He spent eight years studying the Cadiz coastline using an advanced sonar system that mapped the seafloor in high resolution, creating detailed 3D images of the underwater environment. Photo: Getty Images / StockByM.

Independent archaeologist Ben noted that Michael used satellite survey techniques and Merlin Burrows aerial photography to uncover the hidden structures. These technologies helped identify long structures on the ocean floor, some of which were up to 6m high and arranged in an organized manner. Photo: Public domain illustration.

Between the walls are intricately carved canals and in the middle is a rectangular ruin, reminiscent of Plato's description of the temple of Poseidon, which formed what he believed was the capital of Atlantis. Photo: Chronicle / Alamy Stock Photo.
