When a car suddenly makes a strange noise at an intersection, many users today choose to ask a chatbot instead of taking their car to the garage immediately. In an age where artificial intelligence can write letters or diagnose illnesses, asking AI to “diagnose” a car seems reasonable.
That’s exactly what Tim Singer, manager of BMS Cars in Hampshire, UK, wanted to test. He conducted a small experiment to see if popular AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overview and Microsoft Copilot could actually help users solve car problems. The experiment was organized by Scrap Car Comparison, the UK’s largest used car purchasing company.

Singer asked a series of questions ranging from the basic to the complex. Questions included what a yellow warning light on an Audi A3 meant, or whether an old, fault-ridden Renault Clio was worth repairing. Each answer was carefully graded for accuracy, safety, legality, and usefulness.
ChatGPT was the most impressive of the contestants. Singer said the chatbot provided detailed, easy-to-understand, and actionable advice. More importantly, it helped drivers figure out the next logical step rather than risking making their own repairs. Google AI Overview came in second place for its short, easy-to-read answers, but sometimes lacked the necessary depth. Microsoft Copilot was the lowest-rated because it “talked too much but didn’t focus.”

Despite the rankings, Tim Singer stressed that no AI tool is perfect. All three top chatbots struggled when asked to value a car or advise on repair costs.
More worryingly, these AIs sometimes make overly optimistic suggestions that can give users misplaced confidence. “AI can help you navigate, but it can’t replace the experience and skill of a mechanic,” Singer warns. “The problem is that many people believe they can fix their car themselves just because the chatbot says so.”
The results of the test show that, although artificial intelligence is getting smarter, in the complex mechanical world where safety depends on the smallest detail, human experience is still irreplaceable.
