Uerdingen player wants to play for free but still can't. |
In addition, the entire Uerdingen squad has been sacked, despite their offer to continue playing for free until the end of the season.
On April 23, administrator Thomas Ellrich announced that all football activities at KFC Uerdingen had to stop immediately. He said: “All players can now apply for benefits from the employment agency. No further matches will be played until the end of the season.”
The root cause of this collapse was the tax authorities revoking the club’s non-profit status without the knowledge of the board. This left Uerdingen unable to receive donations from the community and unable to accept volunteers, two vital resources for the survival of a semi-professional team.
Uerdingen consultant Mehmet Eser said the players had shown an extraordinary spirit by committing to play without receiving wages. Eser even volunteered to cover the entire running costs of the team until the end of the season. However, these efforts could not save the situation as the support money had dried up and showed no signs of recovering.
KFC Uerdingen, once one of the most famous clubs in German football in the 1980s, now faces an uncertain future. Although the club plans to appeal the bankruptcy decision, the chances of returning to normal operations are slim.
