As one of the young singers "chosen" by Trinh Cong Son, up to now, Quang Dung thinks that the best saying of Trinh Cong Son that Quang Dung has ever heard is "Let it be".

Before the live concert "Love and Memory: Hong Nhung - Quang Dung" which will take place on the night of March 8 at the Vietnam - Soviet Union Friendship Palace, Hanoi , Quang Dung had a friendly conversation with the press.

Quang Dung confided that he is always grateful for the fate that allowed him to meet musician Trinh Cong Son.

From that fate, he found the most suitable path for himself, which is lyrical music . He has been steadfast on that path for decades, even though there were times when people criticized him for being one-dimensional, asking why he kept singing Trinh Cong Son, lyrical music, why he didn’t sing pop music, practice dancing with a dance group…

In the early days of singing in Ho Chi Minh City, the singer from Binh Dinh was shy and timid. There was a time when Quang Dung was very discouraged. At that time, Trinh Cong Son gently encouraged Quang Dung to be patient.

"I came from the Central region to Saigon, in such a big world, it is natural to have to go slower than others. So don't be discouraged", Quang Dung still clearly remembers how the very kind words of that very affectionate musician had a great power of encouragement and support for him.

Having been close to and studying with Trinh Cong Son for three years before he passed away, Quang Dung learned a lot in those three short years.

But the most valuable lessons that Trinh Cong Son gave Quang Dung were not musical instructions but lessons in being human, including the lesson of perseverance and not being discouraged in the face of difficulties.

"Those are invaluable lessons for Quang Dung. Trinh Cong Son taught him to become the person Quang Dung is today," the male singer confided.

And the saying of Trinh Cong Son that Quang Dung likes the most is "Let it be" which he said very often. Quang Dung thinks that maybe that is a saying that Hue people often use.

Quang Dung said that whenever relatives and friends encountered something bad or unhappy, he would always gently pat their shoulders and say softly: "Never mind."

Those two words seem to be an indifferent attitude, not thoroughly solving the problem, but the more Quang Dung lives, the more he finds that saying is actually very profound and magical.

It is actually a very "wise" attitude, reminding people to accept the impermanence of life, to know how to enjoy life from time to time...

That saying is actually a very deep encouragement and consolation, which only those who understand Trinh Cong Son and the Buddhist spirit in him can fully understand.

In times of suffering, hold on to the scriptures to stand up

Quang Dung is also a strong believer in Buddhism. He said he went to the temple to worship Buddha and read sutras since he was young, and took refuge in the Triple Gem a long time ago. And in his life full of challenges, he has relied on sutras to stand up many times.

Most recently, in 2023, Quang Dung faced a huge health challenge. He contracted COVID-19 very seriously while in the US, with no relatives around to take care of him.

During those eight days of illness, he lost nine kilos and lost all his vitality. At times, he had to crawl because of his illness.

At those times, Quang Dung only focused on chanting Buddha's name. Then he overcame the seemingly impossible challenge.

Looking back, Quang Dung is still haunted.

He believes that his sincerity towards Buddha, as well as the merit of his mother and sister reading Buddhist scriptures every day and being vegetarian on weekdays and full moon days, have helped him through his hardship.

Practicing a Buddhist lifestyle, Quang Dung recently no longer enjoys running around singing all day like before.

He chose a more leisurely lifestyle with his mother and sister in a minimalist house with many Buddha statues in Ho Chi Minh City. He spends half his time in the US.

If in the past Quang Dung sang during Tet, now he spends Tet with his family. New Year's Eve is the last show of the year and it is not until the 7th and 8th of January that he accepts shows to sing again.

The male singer, who is about to turn 50, confided that he is happy with his current life, even though he is single, a "peaceful and loving" life.

He loves the current stability and "doesn't care about love anymore". He understands and is content with the fact that God doesn't give anyone everything. He has a lot of love from the audience and a big, happy family, but his happiness as a couple may not be complete.

"At this age, I'm not interested in trying to find love anymore. I feel like my life is very full, peaceful, and full of love. It's not important to me to have this or that anymore," Quang Dung confided.

In the live concert Tinh nho: Hong Nhung - Quang Dung , the two singers will sing their favorite songs.

There will be Trinh Cong Son's music, interspersed with musical performances by Thanh Tung, Duong Thu, Dieu Huong...

Among the hits, there will be new arrangements, and some will remain the same to evoke memories for the audience.

After 15 years, Quang Dung now has a live show with Hong Nhung - Quang Dung's close sister in both music and life.

He said that because he and Hong Nhung are very close in music and life, the show will definitely bring many emotions to the audience.
