Can a stroke victim be saved by pricking a needle into the fingertip?

A social media post titled 'How to save a stroke victim with just a needle', provides information about an alternative stroke treatment.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/08/2025

The video suggests that you should prick the stroke victim's 10 fingers with a needle; the same goes for both earlobes. The claim is: If someone has a stroke, prick the victim's fingers and earlobes with a needle, wait 5 minutes, and they will "revive."

Answers from stroke specialists

Here, two stroke experts discuss the information.

Dr. Osman Mir, a doctor working in the US, confirmed: The information that using a needle to prick 10 fingers can save a stroke victim is completely untrue, according to Wusa9. (America).

There is no scientific evidence that pricking a fingertip in someone who is having a stroke is effective, Dr. Mir added. So don't share your finger pricking as a stroke treatment.

Dr. Kathleen Burger, Associate Professor at George Washington University (USA), explains: In addition to causing unnecessary bleeding, finger pricks also delay proper stroke treatment. Every minute left untreated, millions of brain cells die without any way to recover.

The biggest problem is wasted time, says the American Heart and Stroke Association. Getting immediate medical attention can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.

Remember 4 things to recognize a stroke: drooping face, weak arms, difficulty speaking and get emergency help as soon as possible.

Dr. Mir says: The most important thing in all stroke treatments is time. The sooner you treat it, the more likely you are to save the brain.

Where did the idea of finger pricking come from?

This comes from a study published in 2005. In it, researchers found that pricking the fingertips and earlobes of patients with mild strokes could improve consciousness.

But the big problem with this study is that all the participants were hospitalized for up to three days. That means this approach may hold promise as a treatment aid, but it can't be used as a first aid treatment for stroke victims, according to Wusa9 .
