Italy Vincenzo Costanzo, son of mafia boss Maurizio Costanzo, died after being shot during celebrations for Napoli's Serie A title win.

A shooting in the southern Italian city of Naples on the evening of May 4 left Vincenzo Costanzo and three others injured. Police said Vincenzo Costanzo later died in hospital.

Prosecutors and police in Naples are investigating whether Vincenzo Costanzo was murdered or accidentally shot during celebrations for Napoli's first Serie A title in 33 years. Celebratory firing into the air is common in many southern Italian cities.

Napoli Mayor Gaetano Manfredi said on May 5 that Vincenzo's death was not related to the city's football team's victory celebrations. Manfredi said that the shooting that killed Vincenzo could have been an act of revenge taking advantage of the event.

Vincenzo Costanzo, 26, is the son of mafia boss Maurizio Costanzo, a leading member of a gang in the suburb of Ponticelli. Local mafia gangs are at war with each other.

Tens of thousands of football fans celebrated overnight after Napoli won the Serie A title. More than a hundred people were taken to hospital after street celebrations, with many injured by fireworks, stabbings and brawls.

Naples Governor Claudio Palomba announced on May 5 that a security plan had been put in place to prevent the celebrations from being distorted, adding that police forces would increase checks and street surveillance.
