Former Japanese Princess Mako and her husband, Kei Komuro, have welcomed their first child. This information was confirmed by the Imperial Household Agency of Japan in late May.
Details about the baby's gender and date of birth were not disclosed, however, the Japanese Imperial Household said both mother and child are in good health.
According to The Japan Times, this is the first grandchild of Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko, and the first biological grandchild of Emperor Naruhito. This event marks an important milestone in the former Princess' life after leaving the royal family.

Princess Mako (born 1991) is the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Fumihito. She gave up her royal status in October 2021 to marry Kei Komuro, a classmate at the International Christian University in Tokyo.
Under Japanese Imperial Law, female members of the royal family lose their royal status if they marry a commoner. Notably, Mako also refused the traditional dowry of about $1.3 million when she left the royal family, an unprecedented move in modern history.
After the wedding, the couple Mako and Kei Komuro moved to New York, USA, where the husband is working as a lawyer at a law firm in Manhattan.
The former princess, who has a master's degree in cultural heritage conservation from the University of Leicester (UK), interned at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is known for her low-key lifestyle and is occasionally seen in casual style on the streets of New York.
The Japanese royal family said they confirmed the news of the birth after the media reported it, and expressed their wish that Mako's small family would live peacefully, away from public attention.
The birth of the baby marks a major turning point in the former Princess's life after she left the royal family. Mako and Kei Komuro's love story, which transcends status and tradition, continues to attract international public and media attention.

Mako and Kei Komuro's relationship began when they were both students at the International Christian University in Tokyo. The two dated from 2012 and announced their unofficial engagement in 2017.
However, the wedding was postponed for many years due to controversies related to the Komuro family's finances, causing deep divisions in Japanese public opinion.
Despite the pressure, Mako remained steadfast in her choice. In October 2021, she officially married Kei Komuro and left the royal family, accepting the loss of her title of princess according to regulations.
After a simple, non-royal wedding, the couple moved to New York, USA. Here, Kei Komuro worked at a law firm, while Mako started a new life and continued to pursue the field of cultural heritage preservation.
Mako's decision to marry and leave the royal family caused tension in her relationship with her family, especially with her parents, Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko.
Although they did not publicly object, they expressed concern and asked the couple to “settle” their financial disputes before getting married. However, Japanese media later reported that the family gradually accepted Mako’s choice, although they still kept a certain distance.
Currently, the former Princess is living a rather private life in the United States, away from the media's attention. However, the former Princess's life and choices continue to attract great attention from the Japanese and international public. Because, Mako is considered a symbol of a royal woman who dares to choose love and private life.
