(VLO) According to economic experts, the application of biotechnology (BTO) is the “key” for Vietnam to build a sustainable and highly competitive agriculture. However, the application of BTO in agriculture in our country is too slow, there needs to be orientations and solutions for sustainable agricultural development in the context of international integration and facing challenges such as climate change.
In recent times, localities have developed effective models with unique values, suitable for soil and climate conditions and local strengths for high productivity, quality and economic efficiency. |
Inevitable trend
According to the relevant authorities, applying science and technology to agricultural production is one of the important solutions to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the agricultural value chain.
New technologies such as biotechnology, information technology, and automation in agricultural production and management will help increase productivity, reduce costs, and protect the environment. Digital transformation and the application of technology in agricultural production are inevitable trends, helping to improve productivity, product quality, and reduce investment costs for farmers.
Dr. Cao Duc Phat - former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) affirmed that biotechnology is an achievement of mankind, contributing to the efficiency of agricultural production in the world for many decades, especially in the past 30 years.
Among them, outstanding technologies with tissue culture help the agricultural sector achieve outstanding productivity, contributing to ensuring global food security, reducing the amount of pesticides, and improving soil quality and the environment.
In Vinh Long province, according to the functional sector, the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial People's Committee have paid attention to and directed the implementation of CNSH in the right direction, gradually going into depth, making positive contributions to the local socio-economic development.
The promotion of the application of science and technology in agricultural production in recent times has really created positive changes, gradually changing the awareness and actions of state management agencies, businesses and farmers.
Thereby, contributing to improving productivity, quality, production efficiency, gradually building the province's agricultural sector to develop in a sustainable and modern direction.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Liem - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in recent times, localities have also developed effective models with unique values, suitable for soil and climate conditions and local strengths for high productivity, quality and economic efficiency, with potential for brand development and recognized local geographical indications.
Many new plant varieties have been developed with better resistance to pests and diseases, helping to improve productivity and product quality. In 2023, the agricultural sector completed 6 trials and testing of varieties before proposing and expanding.
Many scientific and technological tasks apply biotechnology to contribute to green agriculture such as: applying biological products in managing tuber borers, grapefruit peel borers, fruit flies; applying organic microbial substrates in agricultural production...
These activities continue to apply proven scientific advances to production practices, while shaping new directions to increase automation rates, diversify products and livelihoods to adapt and reduce risks to market price fluctuations, changing consumer trends and climate change.
Promoting the application of biotechnology in agriculture
The provincial agricultural sector has coordinated to organize many activities to evaluate and select rice varieties suitable for growing conditions in Vietnam, collected by IRRI. |
The achievements of biotechnology applied to agriculture not only help increase productivity and quality of agricultural products but also contribute to environmental protection and reduce the use of chemicals in cultivation.
In the future, biotechnology will continue to play a key role in helping Vietnam's agricultural sector cope with challenges from climate change and meet increasingly stringent requirements from the international market.
However, in recent years, the application of biotechnology has slowed down, with the risk of falling behind the world. In the world today, many new trends have emerged in the development and application of biotechnology.
Along with the change of technology, the combination of biotechnology and digital technology, AI allows to improve the efficiency of biotechnology research and development. In order not to fall behind, it is necessary to quickly approach, grasp and apply these new trends.
According to Dr. Do Tien Phat - Head of Plant Cell Technology Department, Institute of Biotechnology, to meet the requirements of international integration, Vietnam's agricultural sector needs to quickly promote the application of biotechnology.
Advances such as gene editing technology (CRISPR) or precision agriculture solutions will help Vietnamese agriculture increase its competitiveness in the international market, while helping the industry better adapt to climate change.
Emphasizing that the application of biotechnology in agriculture still faces many challenges, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Ninh, Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, said that there needs to be close cooperation between scientists, businesses and farmers.
Besides, support policies from the State also play an important role in encouraging the application of biotechnology in production and promoting sustainable agricultural development.
In addition, it is necessary to develop a policy to train specialized human resources in biotechnology and create favorable conditions for the implementation of new research projects.
Building a brand for Vietnamese agricultural products based on biotechnology is also an important factor to increase value and enhance the competitiveness of products in the international market.
By 2030, Vinh Long province aims to develop and apply biotechnology in a number of sectors and fields of agriculture, post-harvest technology, health care, environmental protection, etc., contributing to rapid and sustainable socio-economic development. In addition, training high-quality human resources, investing in facilities to improve quality to meet the requirements of research, development and application of biotechnology; developing and diversifying biotechnology products, gradually building the province's biological industry into an important economic-technical foundation. |
