In 2022, Hanoi Metro Company Limited made a profit of nearly 97 billion VND, while the previous year it lost more than 37 billion.
According to the audited financial report, last year, Hanoi Metro achieved total revenue from sales and service provision of VND483 billion, a 7-fold increase compared to 2021. Of which, ticket sales revenue increased nearly 12.5 times to VND65.8 billion. Hanoi Metro's revenue in 2022 increased sharply partly because in 2021, the Cat Linh - Ha Dong urban railway (Line 2A) started collecting tolls from November.
In the whole year of 2022, the company recorded subsidy revenue of up to 417 billion VND, 6.6 times higher than in 2021. Thanks to this subsidy, Hanoi Metro escaped the situation of operating below cost price with a gross profit of 109.5 billion VND.
In Hanoi Metro's cost structure, depreciation accounts for 60%, equivalent to VND225 billion. Next is labor with VND99.4 billion (nearly double last year) and the cost of purchased services with nearly VND60 billion (3.7 times higher).
After deducting all expenses, this enterprise had a pre-tax profit of VND96.8 billion. Thanks to that, Hanoi Metro's accumulated loss as of December 31 decreased to only negative VND36.8 billion. By the end of 2021, the enterprise's accumulated loss was VND160 billion.
In the middle of last year, Hanoi Metro said that its financial picture would certainly be different after the city’s subsidy order was added. Because the city’s subsidy not only compensates for the shortfall due to revenue not covering costs but also generates a profit according to regulations.
Currently, along with public passenger transport by bus, urban railways are a service sector so the price is decided by the city (cheap price with subsidy) to encourage people to use them to gradually reduce personal vehicles, reduce congestion and environmental pollution.
Currently, the lowest fare for the Cat Linh - Ha Dong railway is 8,000 VND per trip and the maximum is 15,000 VND for the entire route. The daily ticket price (unlimited trips) is 30,000 VND per person, the monthly ticket is 200,000 VND for general passengers and 100,000 VND for students, workers in industrial parks.
Since early September last year, to meet the increasing demand of passengers, Hanoi Metro has added 2 more trains, bringing the total to 9. During rush hour, there is a train every 6 minutes instead of the previous frequency of 10 minutes.
The Cat Linh - Ha Dong urban railway is 13 km long and elevated, with 12 stations. Each train consists of 4 carriages, with a maximum capacity of 960 people per train, a maximum speed of 80 km/h, and an operating speed of 35 km/h. The train takes 23 minutes to travel the entire route.
In 2023, Hanoi Metro is quite cautious when planning to make only 5.9 billion VND in profit, while total revenue could increase to 519 billion VND (up 7% compared to 2022), of which revenue from ticket sales is nearly 74 billion VND. The company expects to serve more than 10.6 million passengers with more than 81,300 trains.
