With an area of over 50 hectares, encompassing the Bay Mau Lake of about 25 hectares, Thong Nhat Park used to be a symbol of old-style park architecture - closed, charging fees and limiting access. However, now, after removing more than 650 meters of iron fence along Le Duan Street, Thong Nhat Park has truly revived. No longer an "isolated oasis", the park has taken on a new look: open, friendly and full of life.
Just a few months after opening the fence, Thong Nhat Park quickly became an ideal meeting place for all ages. From early morning to late afternoon, the crowds of people flocking to the park grew larger and larger.
Opening the fence not only creates conditions for people to easily access the park but also contributes to freeing up urban views.
Bay Mau Lake - the ecological highlight of the park now appears clear and airy from Le Duan Street, replacing the cold iron bars of the past.
In addition, renovation items such as paving sidewalks with natural stone, adding lighting systems, planting more trees, renovating drainage ditches, etc. contribute to enhancing the landscape and improving the ecological environment for the entire area.
"Before, when going to Thong Nhat Park, I had to find the entrance gate, sometimes going from one end of the street to the other to find the entrance. Since the fence was removed, I just need to cross the street to get in. My children love it, and I find the space more open and safe now," said Ms. Vu Thanh Hang ( in Hanoi ).
"I work in the building across the street. Before, all I could see was a fence and trees. Now, the lake appears and the cool breeze blows right into my office. One day, I brought my lunch box to the lakeside to eat. It felt like I was relaxing in the middle of the city," said Pham Quoc Duy, an office worker who works near Thong Nhat Park.
The winding paths under the shade of green trees become familiar paths for people walking, jogging, cycling or simply taking a walk.
The transformation of Thong Nhat Park opens up many expectations for a future Hanoi: a city of open parks, green living spaces, and friendly places for people to enjoy and connect together.
Open public spaces not only attract more people, but also promote connections between people and nature, and between neighborhoods.
This change also reflects the modern urban planning trend that Hanoi is pursuing – people-centered, encouraging the use of green space to enhance physical and mental health.
