Boost for Nam Dong tourism

Báo Thừa Thiên HuếBáo Thừa Thiên Huế04/06/2023

Market highlights

Since the end of March, Nam Dong Market has been implemented, creating a “new breeze” for this mountainous district every weekend. During the recent April 30 and May 1 holidays, Nam Dong Market attracted a large number of visitors from inside and outside the district to visit, shop and have fun.

Ho Quoc Bao from Hue City shared that he learned about the fair through social media and decided to choose Nam Dong as a place to “change the air” for his family. Only about 1 hour away from the city, this is a new destination for children to experience the cultural identity of ethnic minorities.

The sales area at Nam Dong market is divided into 4 areas, with 36 booths from 50 participating establishments, including: OCOP product display area; ethnic food sales area; agricultural products and local specialties area; refreshment and snack sales area...

During the market sessions, most of the food stalls, refreshments, and snacks had a large sales volume, sold out early, and some stalls did not have enough products to serve the needs of tourists and locals. The display area selling OCOP products, handicrafts, rural industrial products, souvenirs, gifts, and agricultural products, and packaged processed foods had a lower sales volume. The area selling agricultural products and local specialties had a decrease in the amount of products displayed and consumed, and gradually stabilized over the sessions (due to the weekly organization time, the agricultural product output could not meet the demand in time).

In addition to activities serving buying and selling, promoting products, Nam Dong Market also organizes cultural and artistic exchanges and performances, creating a joyful atmosphere for the destination, increasing the attraction of tourists. This is also a good opportunity to promote and introduce the image of the homeland, people, and traditional culture of ethnic groups in the district.

Thanks to the efforts in organization and promotion, the Nam Dong Market model has initially achieved positive results, creating a highlight for the district's tourism products with a total number of visitors of about 1,900 people/session in the first 5 market sessions. Resonating with the effects of the market, during the April 30 and May 1 holidays, the whole district recorded nearly 5,900 visitors (1,391 staying guests) with a total revenue of more than 1.4 billion VND. Compared to the same period last year, the number of visitors increased by 178% and revenue increased by 186.04%.

Professionalizing tourism products

With the characteristic of having a large population of Co Tu ethnic people living, developing community tourism to exploit available potential combined with creating jobs and income for people is considered the "compass" for this mountainous district.

Although the direction has been determined, in reality, the development of community tourism in Nam Dong still faces many difficulties. At the Doi village community eco-tourism site (Thuong Lo commune), although tours and routes with their own identity have been launched, the activities are only seasonal, the services and accommodation infrastructure are not attractive enough to retain long-term visitors. With the YesHue Eco tourist site (Mo Waterfall), after a long period of being affected by the epidemic, it has now initially recovered, recording a large number of visitors coming to visit and experience during the hot season.

Ms. Dinh Thu Ha, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, commented that community tourism in Nam Dong has the potential to be exploited more effectively. What tourists need is professionalism and meticulousness to launch more professional tourism products.

In early 2023, in order to contribute to solving the above situation, the People's Committee of Nam Dong district coordinated with the Project "Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Conservation in Vietnam" to organize a training session to support the people of Doi village in tourism. This is the first time the whole village has been guided to join hands in tourism, instead of just a few households as before. Everyone is excited to join hands to clean up the environment, improve the landscape and install street lighting systems to be ready to serve tourists.

Mr. Ho Van Than, a local resident, shared that he hopes that after receiving support and guidance from the local government and the project, tourism in Doi village will improve.

Since the beginning of the year, the People's Committee of Nam Dong district has coordinated with the Department of Tourism, the Provincial Tourism Association, the Provincial Travel Association, the Tourism Association and the Da Nang City Travel Association to organize a survey program on tourism products in Nam Dong district.

This activity aims to communicate and promote existing tourism products in Nam Dong to stimulate tourism demand; assess the current situation and quality of products; reshape the potential of eco-tourism and community tourism in Nam Dong district; propose solutions to improve the quality of tourism products in the coming time.

According to information from the People's Committee of Nam Dong district, in 2022, the whole district welcomed 16,750 visitors (5,147 overnight guests) with an estimated revenue of VND 4,060 million (an increase of 15,053 visitors and VND 3,478 million compared to 2021). Commercial activities, restaurant services, motels and eco-tourism activities in the area remained stable, the homestay model initially developed, and tourist attractions regularly attracted more visitors from inside and outside the province.

In the coming time, the whole district will focus on improving the quality of customer service and expanding tourism activities and services; exploiting eco-tourism sites combined with streams and waterfalls in the area. At the same time, promoting tourism promotion; linking with units to organize community tourism activities, creative camps, etc.
