At the age of 90, Wang Ruisen, a veteran from Hohhot city in Inner Mongolia, still drives his van around China, accompanied by his 86-year-old wife of more than half a century.
They started this journey in 2003, when Mr. Wang bought his first car to fulfill his dream of traveling across China.
Every year, he drives more than 20,000 kilometers, divided into two or three trips, each lasting months. The couple has set foot in remote areas of Xinjiang, crossed the Tibetan plateau and almost visited all the famous sights in the country.
“We want to experience and see the beauty of our homeland,” Mr. Wang shared. Mrs. Shang smiled and said that her husband drove very steadily, so she always felt secure sitting next to him.

Mr. Wang had been a driver and mechanic in the army since 1951. During a mission, a bomb exploded 20 meters away from his car, causing hearing loss.
Now, despite his declining health, Mr. Wang still maintains his driving habit. “I used to drive more than 10 hours a day, but now I can only drive six or seven hours,” he said. But he always drives carefully, going slowly and steadily, confident that he has not had an accident in the past seven years.
Although his children and grandchildren repeatedly advised him to stop driving because of concerns about his health, he continued his journey. “We advised him to stop driving, but he loved it so much. Driving safely was also his way of feeling alive and free.”
Mr. and Mrs. Wang’s old age did not pass quietly day by day but was continued on each sunny and windy mile. Each trip for them was a new chapter in their journey of happiness – simple yet enduring, just like the way they held hands for more than half a century.
