On June 20, according to Cuban state media, a delegation of high-ranking officials from the country successfully concluded a visit to Russia in May 2023 with nearly 30 trade agreements signed.
Cuba and Russia, both under US sanctions, are aggressively strengthening economic ties by facilitating trade and investment to circumvent those restrictions.
During an 11-day visit to Russia by Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero and Deputy Foreign Minister Gerardo Penalver, the two countries agreed to cooperate to boost Cuban sugar and rum exports, secure supplies of wheat and crude oil from Russia and upgrade outdated tourist facilities in the country.
“We must look for new ways to conduct our economic relations outside the sphere of the dollar, which is increasingly giving way to a multipolar world, and where other actors such as China, India and Russia gain more ground,” Deputy Minister Penalver told state media CubaDebate.
Last week, Russian media reported that the country is ready to supply Cuba with 1.64 million tons of oil and oil products annually.
Since March 2023, fuel shortages have been severe in Cuba, causing people to line up all day to buy gasoline, affecting the economy./.
