ChatGPT's ambitious transformation

Users simply mention a task in a chat and ChatGPT can automatically call up relevant apps without them having to click on a link.

At the DevDay 2025 event on October 6, the parent company of ChatGPT software announced a series of important upgrades to its famous product.

From here, ChatGPT is no longer just a chatbot but a comprehensive platform where applications and automated AI agents can run right in the user interface.

Integrate applications

ChatGPT has been moving towards a more proactive approach when responding to commands from users, but integrating third-party apps takes it to the next level.

Now, users can simply mention a task in a chat and ChatGPT can automatically call up relevant apps without them having to click a single link.

The first time you use an app, ChatGPT asks for permission to connect and shows you what data will be shared. Apps like Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow are already available, allowing users to book vacations, design graphics, create playlists, and find new homes without ever leaving the ChatGPT interface.

Users don't even need to specify which app; they just need to mention planning a trip, ChatGPT can suggest Expedia or Booking.com.

With this update, ChatGPT is becoming a “command center” where conversations turn into actions with just a single prompt. OpenAI has now rolled out this update to all ChatGPT users, except for the European Union (EU) region, which needs more time.

Ambition from the transformation

ChatGPT's change is reminiscent of a smartphone's functionality. But even on a phone, users still have to find and open an app to use it.

With ChatGPT, apps will come to you based on context. In other words, instead of the user having to open the app, the app will join the conversation.

OpenAI's idea is simple: if the world is used to using apps, let people use them right inside ChatGPT. Each app can respond to natural language signals and return structured results, turning ChatGPT into a "super app" or an "operating system for inference."

Imagine having a laptop or phone that boots straight into ChatGPT instead of running Windows or macOS. Users just type or say what they want to do, and different apps and features automatically appear to support it.

On a future ChatGPT-powered device, there will be no real distinction between searching the web, using the desktop, running apps, and giving commands to automated AI agents. There will be a single interface that controls everything—a text command prompt window.

That’s a longer-term vision for the future. For OpenAI, adding a powerful application layer means more reasons for subscribers to stay in the ChatGPT environment. Once they get used to it, users will be less likely to switch to competing models from Anthropic, Google, or Meta.

Along with that, developers get access to over 200 million ChatGPT users and monetization opportunities through usage and revenue sharing programs.

Risks from “junk” applications

By becoming a platform, OpenAI now owns the interface and potentially the app economy within it. Similar to how Google controls search traffic or Apple controls mobile app distribution, OpenAI may soon decide which apps appear in ChatGPT, how they are ranked, and what specific requirements they have.

Currently, there are only seven applications that can be used with ChatGPT. OpenAI has announced that it will review submitted applications for release later this year. Observers are concerned that this could lead to a race among developers to provide applications for ChatGPT.

Looking back to the early days of Apple and Google’s app stores, it wasn’t long before low-quality apps flooded in. They “hacked” the system to get higher rankings in search results by using misleading images and names. Could the same thing happen to ChatGPT?

OpenAI said it would launch a dedicated directory for users to browse and search efficiently. This announcement essentially confirms the launch of a new “App Store”, with monetization options. Observers hope that ChatGPT’s simple and easy-to-use interface will not be drowned out by the “wave” of junk apps./.
