ChatGPT's ambitious transformation

Users simply mention a task in the chat, and ChatGPT can automatically call the relevant applications without them having to click on any link.

At the DevDay 2025 event on October 6th, the parent company of ChatGPT software announced a series of significant upgrades to its popular product.

From this point on, ChatGPT is no longer just a simple chatbot but has become a comprehensive platform where applications and automated AI agents can run directly within the user interface.

Integrate applications

ChatGPT has been moving toward a more proactive approach in responding to user commands, but the integration of third-party applications has taken it to a new level.

Now, users simply mention a task in a conversation, and ChatGPT can automatically call the relevant applications without them having to click on any link.

The first time you use an app, ChatGPT will ask for connection permissions and show what data will be shared. Currently, apps like Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow allow users to book vacations, design graphics, create playlists, and find new homes without leaving the ChatGPT interface.

Users don't even need to specify which app; they just need to mention planning a trip, and ChatGPT can suggest the Expedia or Booking.com app.

With this update, ChatGPT is becoming a “command center,” where conversations are turned into actions with just a single prompt. OpenAI has now rolled out this update to all ChatGPT users, except for the European Union (EU) region, which will require more time.

Ambition stemming from a transformation

The changes to ChatGPT easily remind users of the features found on smartphones. But even on a phone, users still have to find and open an app to use it.

With ChatGPT, apps will automatically find you based on context. In other words, instead of the user having to open the app, the app will join the conversation.

OpenAI's idea is simple: if the world is already familiar with using applications, then let people use them right inside ChatGPT. Each application can respond to natural language cues and return structured results, turning ChatGPT into a "super app" or an "operating system for inference."

Imagine owning a laptop or phone that boots directly into ChatGPT instead of having to run Windows or macOS. Users simply type or speak what they want to do, and various applications with different features automatically appear to assist.

On a future ChatGPT-powered device, there will be no real difference between searching the web, using a desktop computer, running applications, and giving commands to automated AI agents. There will only be a single interface controlling everything – a text command prompt window.

That's a long-term vision for the future. In the short term, for OpenAI, having another powerful layer of applications means more reasons for subscribers to stay in the ChatGPT environment. Once they become familiar with this, the likelihood of users switching to competing models from Anthropic, Google, or Meta will be lower.

In addition, developers gain access to over 200 million ChatGPT users and opportunities to monetize through usage and revenue-sharing programs.

Risks from "junk" apps

By becoming a platform, OpenAI now owns the interface and potentially the app economy within it. Similar to how Google controls search traffic or Apple controls app distribution on mobile devices, OpenAI may soon decide which apps appear in ChatGPT, how they are ranked, and what specific requests they have.

Currently, only seven applications are available for use with ChatGPT. OpenAI announced that they will review submitted applications for release later this year. Observers fear this could lead to a rush of developers offering applications for ChatGPT.

Looking back to the early days when Apple and Google first launched their app stores, it wasn't long before low-quality apps flooded the market. They circumvented the system's rules to climb higher in search results by using misleading images and names. Could the same thing happen with ChatGPT?

OpenAI announced that it will launch a dedicated directory for users to browse and search efficiently. Essentially, this statement confirms the creation of a new "App Store," with monetization options. Observers hope that ChatGPT's simple and user-friendly interface will not be overshadowed by the wave of junk apps.
