AI tools: Sora, Runway, Midjourney, Veo, ChatGPT are being used by Indonesian entertainment companies and filmmakers in large, high-quality film projects. Specifically, OpenAI's Sora 2 tool, which has just been launched in Indonesia, is very popular with filmmakers. Sora 2 is capable of creating high-resolution videos with realistic sound and physical effects. Accordingly, Sora 2 is used for storyboarding and pre-production, helping to save more costs and time than making films in the traditional way.
More than 40,000 people work in film production in Indonesia, and many are already using AI to help them make films. They use ChatGPT for scriptwriting, Midjourney for animation, and Runway for short videos, storyboarding, and editing. Amilio Garcia Leonard, a VFX specialist, says AI can help shorten production time by up to 70%.
“AI can help maximize my core skills, speed up and improve my work efficiency,” added Amilio Garcia Leonard. Maximillian Budihardjo, VFX artist at Visualizm, also believes that AI helps with pre-production sketches, acting as an assistant to improve workflows. Because VFX techniques are often labor-intensive, rule-based and repetitive.
Meanwhile, screenwriters are using AI to reduce repetitive work. Screenwriter Bayu Kurnia Prasetya is often overwhelmed with the huge workload, having to produce hundreds of films by 2024. As a result, Bayu Kurnia Prasetya now uses AI to brainstorm, organize, find errors and complete tasks within 5 minutes, a task that used to take 5 hours.
Agung Sentausa, Chairman of the Indonesian Film Production Association, believes that AI will reduce production costs and can help create better quality films. In fact, currently in Indonesia, a film typically costs about $602,500 to produce, less than 1% of a Hollywood film. Many filmmakers have applied AI to produce films and submitted them to competitions. For example, the documentary “Nusantara” (pictured) won the Best AI Documentary category at the AI Film Awards 2025 in Cannes. At the same time, the first Bali International AI Film Festival will also take place in 2025, with 25 works submitted from around the world .
In Indonesia, AI is seen as a driver for the growth of the film industry. Schools have already launched AI filmmaking training programs, while artists and filmmakers are also planning to upgrade their skills to adapt.
