The talented hero

During the local education class, teachers and students of class 7A, Duy Tan Secondary School, Duy Tan Ward (Kinh Mon) were interested in the book “Sea Lightning” by author Xuan Boi about the fighting life of Lieutenant Colonel Le Xuan Senh. “What I like most is the detail about the wedding of hero Senh. His father carved a pair of clogs from xoan wood for him. The wedding took place by horse-drawn carriage. At that time, there were no bridesmaids or groomsmen, only relatives. The bride and groom did not know each other on the wedding day. But love still blossomed… Everything was very real, vivid and helped me understand other, very new aspects about the hero of my homeland”, said teacher Nguyen Thi Thuy.

According to Ms. Thuy, the book is interesting with details about the night of carrying out a mission near home, Uncle Senh took the opportunity to visit his wife and children: “Le Xuan Senh wanted to hug his wife. But in front of his parents, he did not dare. Le Xuan Senh was about to go into the room when Sung and Hung rubbed their eyes and ran out…”. “The simple and brave soldier had the only wish of fighting the enemy but was very romantic and gallant in his love for his wife,” said Ms. Thuy.

Van Le Quyen, a 7A student, said: "Reading the book, I understand more about Uncle Senh's life, love and be proud of my homeland more, and am grateful to those who fought and sacrificed so that we can have today."

Lieutenant Colonel Le Xuan Senh was born in 1941, in the Trai Xanh residential area, Duy Tan ward. In 1965, he enlisted in an engineering unit of the Northeast Military Region (later under the Navy). He was assigned to Squad 3, Company 2, Water Commando Group 126, the Navy Command at that time.

In 1969, he was sent to fight in the Quang Tri battlefield. From 1969 to 1972, he was a squad leader tasked with attacking enemy ships at Cua Viet port.

Anyone who has read the book is impressed by the clever and talented battles fought by hero Le Xuan Senh against enemy ships. In particular, the first battle in his fighting career: destroying a 5,000-ton American ship in the Cua Viet River in 1969.

At that time, north of Cua Viet port was the McNamara electronic fence. Inside the fence were enemy outposts equipped with all kinds of weapons. At sea, warships patrolled day and night. In the sky, all kinds of reconnaissance planes were flying over the islands...

On the night of November 13, 1969, Mr. Senh and his comrade named Tap and a reconnaissance team of 5 people crawled along the riverbank, and at 11 pm they reached Con Tong. The ship had entered the port more than 1 kilometer away. Knowing it was late, Mr. Senh and Mr. Tap asked to be allowed to attack, if after 2 hours the two of them did not come out, the brothers would retreat first.

Mr. Senh and Mr. Tap swam about 50 meters away from the enemy ship, the guards went around the ship and threw grenades into the water. Waiting until the enemy threw the grenade in the middle compartment, Mr. Senh jumped in to approach. Because the water was flowing fast, the grenade exploded when they got close to the ship, Mr. Senh was stunned by the pressure. After that, he and his teammates still removed the mines from the ship and signaled each other.

On the way back, the water was still flowing fast. Along the shore, enemy boats were parked close together. At times, when they were exposed, enemy guns and grenades exploded loudly. Finally, Mr. Senh and Mr. Tap returned to the meeting place. The scouts jumped down, supported them under their arms and helped them retreat. After a few kilometers, an explosion sounded behind them, the enemy ship was sunk, loaded with military equipment...

Pride of the homeland

Mr. Senh's squad was given the title "The spearhead that penetrates deep, wins wherever it fights". Mr. Senh personally set off mines twice, destroyed 3 enemy ships, and commanded his comrades to sink 13 other ships. With his glorious achievements, Mr. Senh was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces in 1972. That was the pride not only of him and his family, but also of his homeland.

“I am a native son. The emotion of hero Senh in the heroic homeland of Duy Tan made me think that I had to do something worthy. So I wrote a book”, author Nguyen Xuan Boi wrote the book “Sea Lightning” for that reason. The book was written in 9 months (from January to October 2021), published in 2022 with a genuine, humorous voice, simple and attractive writing style.

The book is not only included in the local education program of Duy Tan Secondary School but also kept by the Party Committee and People's Committee of Duy Tan Ward as a valuable document for future generations to learn about the history and fighting traditions of their homeland.

Comrade Tran Hong Tuc, Secretary of the Ward Party Committee, said that the Party Committee, government and people in the ward really hope that in the future a road in Duy Tan will be named after hero Le Xuan Senh. However, when he learned of this intention, Mr. Senh humbly said: “In our country, anyone who goes to war and contributes to the peace of the nation deserves to be a hero. My sacrifice is not worth anything.”

Returning to normal life, Armed Forces Hero Le Xuan Senh is still simple and friendly. He lives happily with his virtuous wife. His children and grandchildren are all grown up.

At 84, he still maintains a strong, healthy body. Perhaps because of his military style, he still loves to "exercise". When people come to see him, they rarely find him at home. People in the area say he is still busy fishing far out in the river. That is why his peers still affectionately call him "otter" of Duy Tan river.
