The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said on April 12 that the Singapore-flagged oil tanker Success 9 was attacked by pirates in the waters off the Russian coast, about 300 nautical miles (equivalent to 555km) from the mainland.
According to Singaporean authorities, at the time of the incident, the Success 9 ship was carrying 20 crew members from many different countries. Personal information of the crew members of the Success 9 ship has not been released.
MPA affirmed that this unit is closely coordinating with the owner of the Success 9 ship as well as relevant agencies to "monitor the situation and provide necessary support".
Hai Soon Group, the company that owns the ship, has not yet commented on the incident. According to international shipping data, the Success 9 has been operating in West African waters for the past 60 days. When it was seized, the ship was carrying a large amount of diesel fuel.
Ivorian authorities confirmed that a Navy patrol vessel was dispatched to the area after receiving the report. However, the whereabouts of the Success 9 remain a mystery as its communications and navigation equipment have been turned off.
Piracy has become a major threat to ships passing through the Gulf of Guinea, a 5,700km shipping route linking Senegal to Angola. Most of these piracy incidents are carried out by gangs from Nigeria.
