British newspapers reported yesterday (April 1) that Craig Bellamy - a former Liverpool player - went bankrupt. The once-famous striker now has only one valuable asset left: a wristwatch. All of Bellamy's other assets were confiscated by the bank or he had to sell them to pay off his debts.
According to the Daily Mail, the former Liverpool player still owes more than £1.3 million (about 37 billion VND). He is living in an apartment rented by Burnley Club - where he works as assistant head coach - and no longer has a private car.
Craig Bellamy used to play for Liverpool.
The main reason Bellamy fell into poverty was due to his failed investments after retiring. Ten years ago, the former Welsh player also had to share part of his assets with his wife after the divorce.
The Daily Mail reported that Bellamy was duped by friends and consultants into making deals. At least one of Bellamy's consultants is under police investigation over his management of the Welsh football star's assets. This person is suspected of forging signatures, impersonating Bellamy to make loans, investments, property purchases and tax evasion.
"I want other players to take this as a warning. Check everything, make sure the people advising you are doing the right thing," Bellamy said in an interview.
"I know many people guess that I lost all my money to alcohol, gambling or drugs. No way. I never touched drugs, nor did I gamble. I just bet on people's hearts and had no luck."
The former Liverpool striker admitted he was naive and ignorant about wealth management. He described the past five or six years - living with nothing and constantly being chased for debt - as being on death row.
Bellamy's biggest losses were in building projects in London, Cardiff, a pub and an unsuccessful film production. He was also investigated for tax evasion for three years.
