On November 21, in Chau Thanh commune (Tay Ninh province), Division 5, Military Region 7 held a ceremony to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its traditional day (November 23, 1965 - November 23, 2025) and announced the Letter of Commendation from the Minister of National Defense .
Attending the event were General Nguyen Trong Nghia, Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Standing Member of the Central Military Commission, Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army; Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang, Deputy Minister of National Defense; Major General Le Xuan The, Commander of Military Region 7; leaders and former leaders of Tay Ninh province; leaders and former leaders of Division 5, Military Region 7 through the periods.
At the Division's President Ho Chi Minh Memorial House, in a solemn atmosphere, delegates took a minute to remember President Ho Chi Minh and the heroic martyrs who sacrificed for the cause of national liberation and protection of the Fatherland.
At the ceremony, the Political Commissar of Division 5 announced the Letter of Commendation from General Phan Van Giang, Minister of National Defense, to the 5th Infantry Division.
General Nguyen Trong Nghia praised and congratulated the comprehensive and proud achievements that generations of officers and soldiers of Division 5 have achieved over the past 60 years. Those feats and achievements will always be a source of pride and motivation for Division 5 to continue to develop strongly, meeting the requirements of the tasks in the new situation.
Faced with the increasingly high demands of the task of protecting the Fatherland in the new situation, General Nguyen Trong Nghia requested that the Party Committee, commanders, officers and soldiers of Division 5 continue to focus on thoroughly grasping the Party's guidelines and viewpoints, the resolutions and directives of the Central Military Commission on national defense and military tasks; be steadfast in politics, absolutely loyal to the Fatherland, the Party, the State and the people.
The Party Committee, commanders, officers and soldiers of Division 5 strongly innovated the content, programs and training methods according to the motto "basic, practical, solid", linking training and combat practice with the requirements of the task of protecting the Fatherland in new conditions.
The unit cares about the lives and spirits of officers and soldiers; strengthens the solidarity between the army and the people, contributing to firmly building the "people's hearts and minds position" and the all-people national defense, and the defense zone is increasingly strong.
Commanders, officers and soldiers of Division 5 actively support people in natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue, new rural construction, sustainable hunger eradication and poverty reduction; focus on effectively implementing defense foreign affairs tasks, especially coordination with the government and armed forces of Tay Ninh province in border management and protection; enhance friendly exchanges, cooperation and sustainable development.
Reviewing the 60-year journey of building, fighting and growing of the Division, Colonel Tran Hoang Giang, Political Commissar of Division 5, said that the Division was established on September 2, 1965 in the May Tau mountain area (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, now Ho Chi Minh City).
This is one of the first two main divisions of the Southeast battlefield. Over the past 60 years, the officers and soldiers of the Division have always promoted the tradition of "Unity, courage, mobility, self-reliance, defeating all enemies," upholding the will to fight and win, fighting bravely and creatively, achieving many glorious feats.
The Division has spent 10 years participating in the resistance war against the US to save the country, 3 years protecting the southwestern border and 10 years performing international missions in Cambodia; 26 years building a strong and comprehensive unit.
The entire unit has more than 34,000 martyrs; 24 groups and 21 individuals were awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces. Currently, the Division is responsible for training, combat readiness and performing other tasks under the direction of the Military Region and the Ministry of National Defense.
Stationed at Trang Lon base (Chau Thanh commune, Tay Ninh province) and a regiment stationed in Phu Giao district (Ho Chi Minh City), since 1989, Division 5 has always closely coordinated with the Party Committee, government, and mass organizations of Tay Ninh province in maintaining political security, social order and safety; actively participating in mass mobilization work, gratitude activities, and local development movements.
According to Colonel Tran Hoang Giang, along with the task of training and combat readiness, the Division effectively deployed propaganda work on the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's laws and policies; carried out well ethnic and religious work; participated in movements such as: Skillful mass mobilization, Military Region's armed forces join hands to build new rural areas, The whole country joins hands for the poor.
The unit has mobilized resources to build "Comrades' Houses", "Military-Civilian Friendship Houses" and together with Tay Ninh province implemented the Project "Eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses."
In the period of 2020 - 2025, nearly 7,000 officers and soldiers of the Division participated in 10 field trips to do mass mobilization work; contributed to completing 125km of roads, 36km of canals, repairing 73 schools and public works; repaired 28 houses; supported hunger eradication and poverty reduction with a total cost of over 1.6 billion VND and more than 8.4 tons of rice.
On this occasion, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Tay Ninh province awarded a Certificate of Merit to Division 5, Military Region 7 for its outstanding achievements in contributing to building a national defense, protecting and developing a strong homeland./.
