“President Trump survived this attack — he won the election,” said Rep. Derrick Van Orden, referring to the incident that had boosted support for Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Others, like Rep. Tim Burchett, also said the incident would promote unity and strength among Republican voters.
The shooting sent shockwaves through an already volatile political landscape, with Democrats who had been critical of Mr Trump pausing their attacks.
Many members of both parties have called for an investigation into the incident. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has announced plans for hearings. Senator Josh Hawley has also called for a full investigation into the attack and the Secret Service's actions.
Meanwhile, Congressman Anthony D'Esposito praised the Secret Service for its quick response and keeping Mr Trump safe, stressing the need to look closely at every detail before criticizing any agency.
Mr Trump is in stable condition and has been taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The investigation is ongoing and authorities are looking into the suspect’s motive.
The incident is not only a serious violent event but also a major political flashpoint in the 2024 election race.
