Speaking after his victory on June 25, former Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, a candidate from the conservative New Democracy (ND) party, thanked the people for giving him the mandate to push forward the reform process that the country so desperately needs.

Official results announced showed that the New Democracy party won 40.4% of the votes and secured a majority in the Greek Parliament with 157 out of 300 seats.

With this victory, Mr. Mitsotakis reaffirmed his commitment to economic growth, which includes the goal of raising wages and reforming the health system.

“The voters have given us a majority. Major reform programs will be implemented soon,” former Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, 55, a graduate of Harvard University (USA), comes from one of the most influential political families in Greece. He led Greece out of the Covid-19 pandemic and had two consecutive years of strong economic growth while serving as prime minister (since 2019).

In the general election on May 21, Prime Minister Mitsotakis's ND party led with 40.8% of the votes, but did not have enough of a solid majority to form a government on its own.

The second and third-placed parties also refused to join the coalition with the ND party, forcing Greece to hold a second round of elections.

According to Greek election rules, the party that wins the second round (after the first round of elections did not give a clear result) will have the opportunity to be awarded up to 50 additional seats in the National Assembly for each constituency where the party receives a percentage of votes above 25%. Thus, with the leading position in the second round of elections, the ND party has received the additional seats.
