60 years ago, the Party Committee of Military Region 5 Command decided to launch the 1965 Spring Campaign, destroying the enemy's main force, destroying the enemy's plan to concentrate people and establish strategic hamlets, gaining control of rural areas, quickly developing position and strength, and preparing for the next operations.
The Doi Muoi stronghold had an important military position, controlling Highway 1 from Tam Quan to Binh De Pass, controlling the entire area north of Hoai Nhon district (now Hoai Nhon town) to the border of Quang Ngai province.
On February 7, 1965 (the 5th day of the Lunar New Year), the 5th Military Region Command concentrated the 409th Mobile Commando Battalion in coordination with local troops and guerrillas to launch a raid on the Doi Muoi base, completely controlling this base, destroying a security company, 4 militia platoons, destroying the puppet government and evil apparatus in the two communes of Hoai Son and Hoai Chau, and seizing many weapons and military equipment.
The victory at Hill Muoi supported the people in the North of Hoai Nhon Town to rise up simultaneously, destroy strategic hamlets, and contribute to defeating the enemy's special warfare strategy on the Binh Dinh battlefield.
During the resistance war against the US, the Doi Muoi stronghold was always a point of fierce and continuous fighting and struggle between us and the enemy. This place bears the mark of the feats of arms of the army and people, the soldiers and compatriots who fought bravely and sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland. The victory of Doi Muoi goes down in the glorious and heroic history of the army and people of Hoai Nhon town in the resistance war against the US to save the country.
Through the resistance wars to protect the Fatherland, especially in the resistance war against the US to save the country, Hoai Nhon town has more than 11,200 martyrs, just counting at the Hoai Chau - Hoai Chau Bac martyrs cemetery, there are nearly 1,500 martyrs' graves gathered to rest at the foot of Hill Muoi, where the heroic feat of the 409th Mobile Commando Battalion of Military Region 5, along with local troops and guerrillas, is recorded.
On the same morning, Hoai Nhon Town also organized a flower and incense offering ceremony at Tam Quan Martyrs' Cemetery and visited the grave of comrade Nguyen Tran, one of the first 5 party members of Cuu Loi Party Cell - the first Communist Party of Vietnam Party Cell in Hoai Nhon with comrade Nguyen Tran as secretary, to commemorate and remember the great contributions of party members and heroic martyrs on the occasion of the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam (February 3, 1930 - February 3, 2025).
