The name and reality of the British Security Agreement

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên16/01/2024

Mr. Zelensky called it "unprecedented" and "a turning point in European history." Britain is the first member of the G7 to implement the group's joint decision to ensure security for Ukraine. The G7's approach is that Ukraine joining NATO will receive NATO's security protection, meaning that the bloc will directly participate in the war to ensure security. While Kyiv remains outside NATO, each member of the bloc will sign a bilateral security agreement with Ukraine.

Britain is one of the NATO members that has supported Ukraine most politically , militarily and financially in its conflict with Russia. Therefore, it is not surprising that London took the lead in signing a security agreement with Kyiv in line with the above general direction of the G7.

For Mr Zelensky, this is of paramount importance. Kyiv and Mr Zelensky cannot help but notice that Western countries are gradually losing support for Kyiv in the ongoing conflict. Therefore, the UK’s pledge of financial aid and arms supplies has the effect of arresting this decline and pressuring other allies to maintain support for Ukraine.

What is even more important to Mr. Zelensky is that he can see the security agreement with the UK as London's commitment to Kyiv's security. That is why President Zelensky compared the security agreement with the UK to the US commitment to Israel's security.

It is true that Britain has increased its financial and military aid to Ukraine. But in terms of security commitments, the agreement is more nominal than substantive. In reality, Britain does not have the resources in all aspects to ensure Ukraine's security.
