Post-exercise warning signs to watch out for

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên21/06/2024

The blood pressure level in a healthy person is 120/80 mmHg, meaning systolic blood pressure is below 120 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure is below 80 mmHg. When you start exercising, your muscles will contract more strongly, your heart will beat faster to pump oxygen-rich blood and nutrients throughout your body, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

High blood pressure after exercise could be a warning sign of future heart disease

If you take your blood pressure during exercise, your systolic blood pressure can rise as high as 200 mmHg, while your diastolic blood pressure remains stable. Systolic blood pressure is more responsive to stress, caffeine, or exercise. Diastolic blood pressure, on the other hand, is less likely to fluctuate.

After exercise, blood pressure can remain elevated for about 30 minutes. This is why the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends waiting at least 30 minutes after exercise to check blood pressure.

However, people with high blood pressure should not ignore and be subjective if their systolic blood pressure is higher than 200 mmHg or takes a long time to return to normal. These people are at high risk of exercise-induced high blood pressure.

Exercise-induced hypertension is a condition that occurs when systolic blood pressure exceeds 210 mmHg for men and 190 mmHg for women. It is important to note that this condition can occur even in people with normal blood pressure.

A study published in the European Heart Journal found that people who experience high blood pressure when exercising face a higher risk of having underlying heart problems or developing heart disease in the future.

Meanwhile, another study in The Journal of Clinical Hypertension measured the blood pressure of 82 healthy men and asked them to complete a walking test. Men with systolic blood pressure of 180 mm Hg or higher had less blood flow to their forearms, stiffer aortas, and more angiotensin II, a hormone that raises blood pressure.

This suggests that the exaggerated blood pressure response may be due to impaired blood vessel function, which makes arteries stiffer and pushes up blood pressure-raising hormones, all of which can lead to future heart problems.

Exercise can raise blood pressure, but only temporarily. Research shows that moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week can help keep your heart healthy and lower your blood pressure without medication, according to Healthline .
