According to the annual ranking of the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) - the economic research agency of the global information and communication services group The Economist, including The Economist newspaper - announced on June 17, Copenhagen won after receiving "perfect" scores for stability, education and infrastructure, while Vienna tied for second place with the Swiss city of Zurich.

The EIU ranked 173 cities around the world based on a number of factors, including healthcare, education , stability, infrastructure and environment.

Australia's Melbourne retains fourth place, while Switzerland's Geneva is fifth on the list.

Outside the top five, Sydney, moved up the list, jumping from seventh overall to sixth, while Japan's Osaka and New Zealand's Auckland tied for seventh.

At number 9, Adelaide is the third Australian city to make the top 10, while Canada's Vancouver takes the 10th spot.

According to the EIU, although Vienna scored highly in most categories, its score in the stability category dropped significantly, while Copenhagen scored highly in all categories.

Vienna's sharp drop in stability scores was blamed on recent incidents, including a bomb threat at a Taylor Swift concert last summer, which led to the cancellation of the event.

“Global liveability remained unchanged over the past year and, as in 2024, stability scores declined globally. Pressure on stability has seen Vienna lose its position as the most liveable city after three years of holding onto it,” Barsali Bhattacharyya, deputy sector director at the EIU, said in a statement.

Vienna is not the only city to receive a lower score for a category in which it previously scored highly.

Calgary, which ranked fifth in 2024, dropped out of the top 10 this year, dropping to 18th place after receiving a lower health care score, along with three other Canadian cities, due to the strain on the country's health care system.

In 2024, stability scores fell for Western Europe and the Middle East and North Africa, Bhattacharyya added. In this year's rankings, scores also fell for Asia.

While some cities fell in the rankings, others made significant progress, with Saudi Arabia's Al Khobar rising 13 places from 148 to 135.

The kingdom has invested significantly to improve access to health care and education under Vision 2030, a broad plan to diversify the economy and reduce its dependence on oil.

Indonesia's Jakarta also rose in the list, rising 10 places from 142 to 132 thanks to core improvements in stability.

Unsurprisingly, the bottom of the list has not changed much over the past year, with Damascus, Syria still ranked as the world's least liveable place six months after the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad. Tripoli, Libya, ranked second to last.

Bangladesh's capital Dhaka ranked third from the bottom, while Pakistan's Karachi and Algeria's Algiers were ranked the fourth and fifth least liveable cities.
