Strengthening diplomacy and cooperation with South Korea

(Quang Ngai Newspaper) - Vietnam and South Korea are two countries with a long-standing and effective relationship in all fields such as economy , society, culture... In Quang Ngai, South Korea is the leading country in terms of the number of investment projects. Quang Ngai and a number of localities and agencies of South Korea regularly connect, exchange and cooperate with each other.

Bright spot in investment attraction

A typical example of the success of Korean enterprises in Quang Ngai is Doosan Enerbility Vietnam Co., Ltd. (Doosan Vina). This is the earliest Korean enterprise to invest in Dung Quat Economic Zone and is the first heavy industrial factory in Dung Quat Economic Zone to successfully operate in production and business. Doosan Vina is an industrial complex with an investment capital of 300 million USD and an area of over 100 hectares in Dung Quat Economic Zone. Doosan Vina specializes in manufacturing equipment for power plants, seaport cranes, seawater desalination equipment, raw fuel processing equipment, modules, steel structures, etc. To date, Doosan Vina has completed nearly 400 projects with a total weight of more than 630 thousand tons, a total order value of more than 3 billion USD; creating jobs and regular income for thousands of workers.

Doosan Vina is also an enterprise that focuses on supporting and caring for the community, especially in the fields ofeducation , health care, and housing. Since its establishment, Doosan Vina has invested more than 5.6 million USD to organize health check-ups and provide free medicine for people; donate medical equipment to hospitals; build schools; support the cost of building new and upgrading houses for workers and people... In addition, Doosan Vina also connects with agencies and units to organize heart surgery programs, cleft lip and palate surgery for children, cataract surgery for people; give scholarships to students; provide free vocational training for disadvantaged youth. In 2024, Doosan Vina cooperated with Chung-Ang University Hospital (Korea) to donate medical equipment to Binh Son District Medical Center, organize medical examinations and treatment, and implement educational programs...

According to statistics, up to now, Korea is the leading country in terms of the number of investment projects in the province. Korean enterprises account for more than 23% of the total industrial production value, 8% of export turnover, 12% of import turnover of the total number of FDI enterprises...

Cooperation and connection in all fields

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Korea, in 2022, the Provincial People's Committee organized a series of cooperation and exchange events including "Meeting with Korean enterprises in Quang Ngai province in 2022". Thereby, listening to the sharing as well as the wishes, proposals and recommendations of Korean enterprises and investors operating in production and business in the province. The province organized a photo exhibition "Cooperation - Development of Quang Ngai - Korea", displaying more than 60 photos of commemorative activities, important diplomatic events of the leaders of the two countries; results of cooperation in foreign affairs, investment, cultural exchange, art, sports, people-to-people exchange between Quang Ngai and Korea. Another highlight of the series of events is the "Vietnam - Korea art exchange program" with 20 outstanding performances. The exchange program is also an opportunity to promote the image of the homeland and people of Quang Ngai to Korean friends living, studying and working in the province.

In 2023, the Provincial People's Committee organized a working delegation to visit and work with agencies, organizations and partners in Korea. The delegation visited and worked with Chung-Ang University Hospital, the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), KBS Korean Television and Doosan Enerbility Group Korea. At the places visited, representatives of agencies, organizations and partners expressed their joy at welcoming the provincial delegation. The two sides exchanged and introduced the working model, outstanding results and especially the cooperation milestones with Quang Ngai. The provincial delegation expressed its thanks to the agencies, units and partners for their attention and cooperation with the province in the past time. At the same time, the provincial delegation introduced the potentials, investment opportunities, and preferential policies for Korean enterprises to learn about and invest in areas such as heavy industry, manufacturing industry, high-tech industry, electronics, smart agriculture, construction and application of smart urban development solutions, maritime transport, logistics, etc. The province is committed to always accompanying and supporting FDI enterprises, including Korean investors, applying mechanisms and policies according to current regulations of Vietnamese law.

The province's export turnover to the Korean market in the first 10 months of 2024 is estimated at 56.6 million USD. The main export items are mechanics, heat recovery boilers, fibers, textiles, frozen breaded shrimp, leather shoes of all kinds, cassava starch, clothes, etc. The import turnover from the Korean market in the first 10 months of 2024 is estimated at 32.4 million USD. The main import items are the production of heat recovery boilers, materials, components, lens production, lens molds, leather shoe raw materials, etc.

Recently, the delegation of Pham Van Dong University visited, learned and signed a memorandum of cooperation with Pukyong National University (Korea). The delegation visited and worked with Pukyong National University, the University of Engineering and the Center for Technical Research, the University of Information Technology and Mathematics, and Physics under Pukyong National University. The parties discussed and agreed on issues of lecturer exchange; student exchange at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels; development of joint educational programs; organization of joint research activities and exchange of information and research works; organization of seminars, symposiums, etc.

“The trip helped Pham Van Dong University learn about Korean university education in general and Pukyong National University in particular. The delegation visited the facilities, scientific research, organized activities and activities of one of Korea's leading educational institutions; learned about the content and programs of some training majors, and consulted similar majors in the training program at Pham Van Dong University. The trip contributed to fostering the friendship between the two schools and was an opportunity to promote the image of Quang Ngai and Pham Van Dong University to the host country. The university sent two lecturers to study for a doctorate in Korea,” said Tran Dinh Tham, Principal of Pham Van Dong University.

To date, the official development assistance (ODA) capital provided by the Korean Government in the province is about 7.4 million USD. With funding from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Provincial People's Committee is implementing the Vietnam - Korea Peace Village project. The project will contribute to supporting the socio-economic development of people in the project area, demonstrating the good friendship and cooperation between the province and Korean agencies and organizations, contributing to the success of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
Currently, the province is coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vietnamese diplomatic representative agency in Korea and the Korean diplomatic representative agency in Vietnam and Korean partners to promote the establishment of friendly and cooperative relations between Quang Ngai province and Jeju province.
