Schools, as a microcosm of society, cannot stand outside this global trend. We know that the main tools for applying digitalization in teaching and educational activities for students are primarily the use of devices such as smartphones, iPads, tablets, and calculators.
Digitalization helps to personalize learning support, enhancing students' autonomy and self-learning abilities. Interactive learning applications, educational games, and educational content, through high-quality videos and audio, make learning and education more lively, engaging, and captivating, especially for young students. Currently, there are many valuable learning applications for learning foreign languages or introducing subjects, supporting the innovation of teaching and learning methods. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) (GenAI, ChatGPT) will greatly enhance the teaching and learning process and personalize learning. ChatGPT is truly a giant AI machine acting as a super-advisor for students' experiential learning.
Digitalization enables learning anytime, anywhere, without limitations of space or time. It allows quick and comprehensive access to relevant information, saving time and reducing the need for printing and using paper books (hard copies). Calculators also save students time when performing arithmetic and algebraic calculations, as well as quickly looking up formulas and forms.
Furthermore, it helps to enhance communication and cooperation between teachers, students, and their parents quickly and for a large number of students. It also helps to monitor attendance and progress or to regularly assess individual students' learning.
It can be said that the use of digital devices in education not only improves the quality of learning but also helps students develop essential skills for the future in an increasingly technology-dependent world . And the positive aspect is that this trend is irreversible.
However, the biggest problem and challenge is the difficulty in managing students' participation in a digital environment. The negative consequences include students becoming "technology addicts," reducing creativity, decreasing social interaction, and hindering connections with family and friends. This distraction and wasted time on apps, games, or social media can lead to a decline in life skills and academic performance. This is not to mention the negative health impacts on eyesight, spine, musculoskeletal system, sleep quality, anxiety, depression, stress, or social isolation due to a lack of face-to-face interaction with others.
Therefore, feasible methods are needed to manage students as they participate in future technological trends. The most important thing is to strengthen education to change perceptions, and consequently, students' behavior. In particular, families and schools must work closely together to manage them. Cultivating a lifestyle suitable for a technological environment should begin very early, so that students develop self-mastery, responsibility, and intelligence in a digitally advanced environment.
