To help flower growers ease their worries for Tet

QTO - Almost every year, when the Tet flower season begins, worries about the weather are always on the minds of people in large flower farms in Quang Tri. This year, the worries and anxiety are even more compounded because the extreme weather is becoming increasingly difficult to predict. Besides, there are concerns such as: Lack of capital, production human resources; high prices of flower seeds, narrow consumption market... However, up to now, many households in the flower villages of An Lac (Dong Ha ward), Ly Trach (Nam Trach commune)... have started to prepare the land and plant seeds with the hope of a more complete Tet flower season.

Fear of "God" making things difficult, seed prices "escalate"

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Trung (born in 1990, Nam Trach commune) has just rented a machine to prepare the land for the Tet flower crop, planning to start planting in the 9th lunar month. With an area of over 1 hectare, this year, his family will continue to grow flowers such as: Chrysanthemum, heather, yellow trumpet vine, lily... Mr. Trung's biggest worry is the unusual weather, it has rained a lot in the past few days, making land preparation difficult. If the weather continues to be unfavorable, he is worried that it will be difficult to maintain the quality of the flowers. In addition, the price of lily bulbs is currently higher than last year because they are mainly imported from abroad, depending on market prices. It is expected that the price of lilies will be high during Tet, so it will be difficult to sell.

As for Mr. Le Van Hien (65 years old, Nam Trach commune), for the 2026 Tet flower crop, his family planted more than 4,000 lily bulbs and many chrysanthemums. Due to the sharp increase in the price of lily bulbs, his family had to borrow more capital from the bank to buy seeds. Previously, with more than 3 hectares of flowers, his family was one of the households with the largest flower growing area in Ly Trach commune (old). 5 years ago, the family also invested in 2 large greenhouses to grow flowers, limiting the impact of the weather. But now, due to lack of human resources, he is old and weak, his children are not interested in following the traditional profession, and extreme weather fluctuations make the profession unstable, so the family's flower growing area is increasingly narrowing.

According to Vice Chairman of Nam Trach Commune People's Committee Doan Ngoc Nhan, the whole commune currently has about 300 households growing flowers on an area of over 30 hectares. For the 2026 Tet flower crop, people are most concerned about the unusual weather conditions, which will negatively affect the growth of flowers, leading to undesirable quality. Currently, households are preparing the land and preparing to plant Tet flower seeds. Some households have proactively planted seeds in advance and started taking care of the flowers so that they bloom at the right time.

As for An Lac flower village (Dong Ha ward), Mr. Tran Manh Thuong, Deputy Head of the Economic - Infrastructure and Urban Department, Dong Ha Ward People's Committee, said that on an area of more than 25 hectares, people have planted 50,000 pots of Tet flowers, including 15,000 pots of chrysanthemums, 35,000 pots of marigolds, carnations, etc. In particular, this year, for the first time, the Pico chrysanthemum variety has been put into trial planting with many expectations. Like every year, farmers are quite worried about the weather, most afraid of heavy rains, causing prolonged flooding. The Department has developed a plan to respond to unusual weather developments, advising growers to be ready to raise flower pots when there is heavy rain, to avoid being passive and surprised.

Long-term strategies are needed

Nam Trach Commune has identified flower growing as one of the local economic spearheads in the coming time; however, there are still many difficulties in developing the traditional craft to its full potential. According to Vice Chairman of Nam Trach Commune People's Committee Doan Ngoc Nhan, the flower growing area of the commune is still small, fragmented, and not concentrated, so it is difficult to form specialized flower growing areas. Even in each household, the area is scattered, many households rent land from other families to grow flowers. Most households have not applied science and technology (S&T) to production but mainly follow traditional manual methods.

Previously, Ly Trach commune (old) established a flower growing cooperative but only in form, because of ineffective operations and indifferent farmers, it disbanded. The consumption market is also "everyone runs for their own" style, not stable and sustainable. Consumption channels through e-commerce trading floors or social networks are still rare. For many years, the commune has not been able to build the Ly Trach flower brand, increasing recognition for local flower products.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Trung shared that every year during the Tet flower season, he introduces his products through social networks, mainly Zalo, and receives many orders from inside and outside the province. According to him, this is an effective consumption channel, so he hopes to receive support from local authorities, departments and agencies to participate in training and fostering on e-commerce and improve flower growing techniques, and apply science and technology. Sharing the same view, Mr. Le Van Hien also expressed his concern because every Tet flower season, he is worried about the refrain of "good harvest, low price" and is forced to lower prices by traders. If there is an effective cooperative group that supports the consumption market, it will be a "key" to solving this concern.

Vice Chairman of Nam Trach Commune People's Committee Doan Ngoc Nhan added that in the coming time, the commune will have more effective solutions to develop the local flower growing profession, including continuing to focus on training, fostering, and improving flower growing techniques for farmers. At the same time, the commune will study options to build product brands, increase the value of flowers and support the expansion of a more stable and diverse consumption market for flower products.

According to Tran Manh Thuong, Deputy Head of the Economic-Infrastructure and Urban Department, Dong Ha Ward People's Committee, the department is currently developing a project to develop high-tech urban agricultural economy, period 2026-2030, vision to 2035, in which there will be solutions to develop An Lac flower village, such as: Linking with businesses to diversify consumption markets; expanding flower growing area; promoting the application of science and technology, enhancing training, technical training and building the brand of An Lac flower village; focusing on e-commerce and creating a solid position for local flowers in the domestic flower market...
