In recent years, people along National Highway 13 (section passing through Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) have become familiar with the image of a skinny young man with dark, burnt skin and hands full of burn scars... making a living by erasing car chassis and engine numbers on this route.
Lying under the car to grind the chassis number, Mr. Tri said loudly, this job always makes people dirty because they often crawl under the car to grind the chassis number, and crawl into the dusty hood to grind the engine number.

"This job sounds strange and simple, but when you get down to it, you'll experience the difficulties and hardships. Those who have knowledge and experience can finish a car in 5-10 minutes, but those who don't can spend hours without getting a number," Tri said about his job.
Every day, he has to wake up early to stamp the numbers for car shops and showrooms so that they can complete the paperwork and deliver the cars to customers. This job is hard and tiring, but in return, he has a stable income. Every day, Tri can stamp 30-40 cars. Each car has 6 sets of numbers, depending on the difficulty of the car, the salary is calculated at 300-400 thousand VND/car.
Mr. Tri said that in 2015, he left his hometown to go to Ho Chi Minh City to work as a car painter and repairman in a garage. During his time as a car mechanic, Mr. Tri saw many customers hiring him to do the chassis and engine number stamping, but few mechanics accepted because it took a lot of time, rolling under the car and working on the engine.
While he was grinding the engine of a car, Mr. Tri continuously received phone calls, 5 times in a row, from other car salon owners to schedule grinding appointments (Photo: Xuan Truong).
After times like that, lying awake at night thinking, Mr. Tri had the idea of becoming a professional frame and engine number engraving service provider.
Since that day, he has been regularly researching car brands and models, then memorized the chassis and engine numbers of each type of car. In 2021, Mr. Tri officially entered the profession of stamping chassis and engine numbers.
"After going through enough hardships and getting used to the job, I quit my job as a mechanic and went directly to car dealerships along Highway 13 to introduce the service of getting chassis and engine numbers stamped.
At first, garages and showrooms were still confused, but because this was a practical need, the number of people calling me to come and get their numbers increased," Mr. Tri confided.
Currently, each car usually has to have 5 sets of chassis and engine numbers (Photo: Xuan Truong).
According to Mr. Tri, to engrave the vehicle number, you need to use A4 decal paper with a yellow base according to the Traffic Police's standards, press it against the embossed number on the vehicle body (which is the chassis number and engine number) and use a pencil to engrave on the paper so that the number is printed on the paper.
To promptly patch the car's gears for the auto shops, Mr. Tri has now recruited a number of young workers. After a period of hands-on training, he assigns the new workers to patch the gears.
"To pursue this career, you must also know how to repair cars in a basic way. A new person in the profession must spend 1-2 years to understand and grasp the structure, chassis layout, engine of each car model and year, from there, find the position to stamp the chassis number and engine number to grind," said Mr. Tri.

Mr. Nguyen Thai Tan, representative of THP auto salon, Thu Duc city, Ho Chi Minh city said that the car chassis number is a unique series of numbers attached to the car frame, used to identify the car.
The engine number is a unique series of numbers attached to the vehicle's engine, used to identify the vehicle's engine. The engine number is usually engraved directly on the engine block.
"According to regulations, to register a new vehicle, the vehicle owner must provide information on the chassis number and engine number to the police agency where the vehicle is registered. To be able to provide this information, the vehicle owner must know where the chassis number and engine number of the vehicle are located in order to copy/write (scan) it," Mr. Tan explained.
The most difficult thing is crawling under a diesel car because it's dusty, hot, and smells of oil (Photo: Xuan Truong).
Mr. Tan also said that to write the chassis number and engine number, you must use a special paper. In some cases, the chassis number and engine number of the car are in a complicated position, hard to reach, so the person writing must crawl under the car, put his hand into the engine slots to do it, which is very difficult.
For skilled people it takes about 5-15 minutes, for those who are not familiar it takes 1-2 hours to finish polishing the car's numbers.
"To complete the paperwork and deliver the car to the customer on time, every time I sell a car, I call Mr. Tri to come and get the car number quickly. Not only me, but most of the salons along Highway 13 are Tri's acquaintances," said Mr. Tan.
