University admission scores expected to decrease, consider choosing a major

This year's benchmark scores increase or decrease depending on the number of candidates applying to universities and majors.

However, the common denominator for candidates is still choosing the right major that is suitable for their economic conditions.

On the afternoon of July 10, within the framework of the program "Bringing schools to candidates" in 2025, Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper organized a talk show - online consultation "Registering for university admission in 2025" with the participation of experts and representatives of universities.

The exam is difficult, the standard score will decrease

2025 is the year of high school graduation exams with many innovations. Accordingly, for the first time, candidates will take the exam according to the 2018 General Education Program; admission methods - except for direct admission according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) - will be implemented after the high school graduation exam results are available; score conversion between admission methods and combinations...

These changes pose many challenges for candidates in preparing their applications, arranging their wishes and "strategies" for admission.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Thuy, Head of Admissions and Communications Department - Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City, assessed that this year's high school graduation exam focuses on thinking and analytical skills. In particular, math and English are closely related to reality and differentiate well. However, the innovations in the way the exam is written have made many candidates worried, confused, and not daring to "finalize" their wishes.

Based on the analysis, MSc. Truong Quang Tri, Deputy Head of Student Affairs Department - Nguyen Tat Thanh University, predicted that admission combinations using math or English subjects may slightly reduce the benchmark score. However, the specific reduction level depends on each major and each university.

"The results of this year's exam reflect the transition process of the neweducation program. This is also an opportunity for universities to review and make appropriate adjustments. After this exam, the next generation of students will also be more aware that studying is not simply doing exercises or understanding knowledge, but also requires thinking and adaptability" - Master Tri commented.

MSc. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung, Deputy Head of the Admissions - Communications and Business Relations Department of the University of Finance - Marketing, said that universities currently have many different admission methods. The benchmark score depends on the quota of each school/training program/major. It is predicted that in some key majors of universities, the benchmark score increase - decrease fluctuates from 0.5-0.75.

At the University of Finance and Marketing, the marketing major enrolls students in an integrated program, in which math is a compulsory subject. Candidates with strengths in languages and a passion for marketing can choose international joint programs at the school according to the following models: 2+2, 3+1...

According to the plan of the Ministry of Education and Training, the 2025 high school graduation exam scores will be announced at 8:00 a.m. on July 16. After the exam scores are available, candidates can register and adjust their admission wishes on the system (unlimited number of wishes) until July 28.

MSc. Phung noted that candidates should not be subjective when choosing a major and school. Candidates who do not take a foreign language exam and use a foreign language certificate must also register and provide evidence to universities to update the common system of the Ministry of Education and Training.

In addition, candidates need to have a notebook to record relevant information. For example, when registering for admission, candidates must write down the school code. Many cases have confused the school's abbreviation with the school code, confused the order of wishes, etc.

Currently, many candidates still think that passing university entrance exams by graduating from high school is the "best". However, this is a wrong point of view, unintentionally putting psychological pressure on students, making the setting of wishes no longer objective.

"Candidates need to have a smart "strategy" to set their wishes, setting 5-7 wishes. Of which, wish 1 is the wish that most satisfies their passion, suitable for both their personal dreams and their family's finances" - Associate Professor Thuy emphasized.

Should I register multiple wishes?

MSc. Hoang Thanh Tu, Deputy Head of the Information and Communication Department, University of Science - VNU-HCM, said that the exam score distribution is only a secondary factor for candidates to have more backup options.

Despite receiving career counseling from high school, many candidates still choose their major based on their feelings or friends. There have been students who have been admitted to top schools and "hot" majors but lack passion, leading to "breaking down" halfway. On the other hand, many candidates are too confident in their abilities so they only register for 1-2 wishes, which is very risky.

MSc. Tu advised: "Candidates should not hesitate, change their wishes continuously or wait until the last minute to register. If any problems occur, they will not be able to handle them in time. Candidates need to have at least 3 main wishes, including: dream, moderate and safe wishes". MSc. Tu stated that a major is considered "easy to breathe" if the standard score is equivalent to the candidate's current expected score or only differs by about 2 points.

According to experts, candidates can learn and explore themselves; consult advice from relatives, family, alumni, information from recruitment units... to know the skills and foundation needed for future work. In addition to learning about the field of study, candidates can refer to English enhancement programs, advanced programs or international joint programs to expand the foreign language learning environment and increase development opportunities abroad in the future.

Even though the high school graduation exam has been completed, psychological preparation is still very important. Master Truong Quang Tri believes that the exam results only show a part of the ability, and absolutely do not reflect the whole picture of the future. What candidates need to do now is to consider and choose the right major and the right environment to develop.

"Career does not determine a person, but choosing the right career determines a person's whole life" - Master Tri emphasized.

Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Thuy said that Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City is a public university with many different tuition fees. The tuition fee for the standard program is about 11 million VND/semester, the tuition fee for the partial English program is nearly 20 million VND/semester. The school has many scholarship programs to support students. Normally, students only take about 3-3.5 years to complete the university training program. In addition, Banking University also has a dormitory "apartment in school" with a capacity of more than 3,000 students.

This year, the University of Natural Sciences enrolls students in many technology-related majors, such as information technology, microchip design, semiconductor technology, biotechnology, chemical engineering technology, environmental engineering technology, educational technology, etc.

According to Master Truong Quang Tri, in addition to the health sector, Nguyen Tat Thanh University also has strengths in the arts and public relations sectors. Answering a question sent to the program by a candidate, Master Tri said that with a score of about 25-26 in the C00 group, candidates can confidently apply for admission to the university's arts sectors.

For majors such as vocal music, piano, etc., if candidates want to be admitted to Nguyen Tat Thanh University, they must take an aptitude test organized by the school or use the aptitude test scores they have taken at another school for admission.

Ensuring fairness for all candidates

Experts say that converting academic transcript scores and international certificates to a common scale with high school graduation exam scores is an important technical solution for comparison, creating conditions for candidates to use multiple admission methods at the same time.

To enhance transparency and objectivity, universities need to clearly publicize factors related to selection ability, scoring methods and converting scores to a specific scoring coefficient. Scores from exams are all converted to a 30-point scale, equivalent to high school graduation exam scores.

Candidates should pay special attention to admission methods that use additional points (for example: city/national excellent student scores, foreign language certificates). At the same time, candidates should proactively update evidence and submit it to universities according to the registered combination.

The program would like to express our sincere thanks to the following units for their support: Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company, Ho Chi Minh City Development Joint Stock Commercial Bank (HDBank), Vingroup Corporation, Uniben Joint Stock Company and supporting units: University of Finance - Marketing, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City.
