Recruiters at large businesses and corporations point out weaknesses that students need to overcome and share secrets to help students make an impression and easily get a nod during interviews.
Hanoi National University organized the "Career Journey and Job Connection" Festival in 2024 with the participation of nearly 8,000 students and many domestic and foreign corporations and enterprises.
The event aims to help students orient themselves, prepare necessary career skills, enhance their competitive advantage when entering the labor market; keep up with job trends and recruitment requirements of organizations and businesses. This is an opportunity for new students or students preparing to graduate or those looking for a job to learn and exchange information about career opportunities, recruitment processes and conditions of organizations and businesses.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Thanh, Recruitment Director ofSun Group Corporation, said that during the recruitment interview process, he noticed that the weakness of current students is often overconfidence, leading to easy "cutting"; no clear career orientation...
In addition, some students are somewhat impulsive and reckless. “Some students, when they come to the interview and see some difficulties or dislikes, immediately stand up. I have noticed that some young people cannot handle pressure,” said Mr. Thanh.
With 24 years of experience as a headhunter for domestic and foreign corporations and businesses, Mr. Thanh shares some tips for students to have a successful job interview. The first is to prepare before the interview takes place. "You need to learn carefully about the company or business you are interested in, and even learn about the interviewer. You can search by name or go to famous recruitment websites or Facebook about the interviewer," Mr. Thanh said.
Then you need to learn about the job description and the position you are applying for.
In addition, according to Mr. Thanh, young people should not forget to prepare questions for the employer. “The recruitment interview is a two-way process. We will ask you questions to find out if you are suitable for the business or company. You can also ask questions to learn about us. In essence, this is a process where both parties get to know each other, see if they are suitable, and then come to an agreement or contract,” he said.
Young people can also refer to the experiences of people doing similar or related jobs to better understand the challenges and interests of a certain position.
Equally important, according to Mr. Thanh, students need to practice a lot for answering interviews.
On the day of the interview, young people need to wear polite and professional clothes. They should arrive on time and stay relaxed. “Lack of confidence or fear will affect the quality of the interview, even the possibility of success or failure. You should be on time, even 15 minutes early to adjust and check your clothes and image. Employers pay close attention to managing the image of candidates,” said Mr. Thanh.
During the interview, in addition to keeping a smile and being friendly, Mr. Thanh emphasized that it is necessary to share honest information about yourself: "When you give incorrect information about your experience, employers in each field will know immediately."
In addition, candidates need to show passion and interest in the job/position they are applying for. “For many of you, we feel like you don’t want to get the position you are interviewing for, while motivation is one of the very important criteria to evaluate candidates.”
Above all, you need to demonstrate your ability and experience appropriate to the job you are applying for.
Mr. Thanh advised that after the interview, students should send a thank you note either via text message, email or call the employer directly. “It is a way for you to show your interest and passion for the position you are applying for.”
If the interview is face-to-face, according to Mr. Thanh, students can make a good impression through shaking hands and greeting; using body language in communication, presentation...
If you interview online, you need to check the interview link, camera, seating position in advance and choose a suitable location to avoid distractions. “You should use a background image when interviewing online. I have encountered many cases where, during the interview, I saw family members walking behind me,... this shows a lack of professionalism. There are many people who were on the street when I called them for an interview. I definitely failed these cases because it shows that you are not really interested and have not prepared to arrange your time.”
Ms. Pham Thi Thu Hien, Deputy Director of the Center for Recruitment and Talent Attraction, SHB Bank also pointed out “tips” for candidates to conquer employers: dress neatly and professionally; know how to listen and remember information from employers; only speak when necessary and say enough; be calm and confident; control your attitude during the interview.
According to Ms. Hien, right from the classroom, students can position and build their personal brand, thereby creating opportunities for self-development. “You need to identify your own unique points and develop those unique characteristics,” Ms. Hien said.
