Something that has never happened to MU in more than 50 years

Jonny Evans' departure from MU means that for the first time since the 1973/74 season, the MU squad will no longer have any players who played under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Evans is Sir Alex's last student in the current MU squad.

Evans is the last remaining link from Sir Alex's 'golden era'. The Northern Irish centre-back was promoted from the academy and made his senior debut in 2007 under the legendary Scottish coach.

After leaving the club in 2015, Evans surprisingly returned to Old Trafford on a free transfer in the summer of 2023. He played a "situational option" role in Erik ten Hag's patchwork defence at that time.

Although no longer a key player, Evans' presence in the MU dressing room still has symbolic value, a link between the past and the present. Evans' departure after this season means the end of more than half a century in which MU always had at least one player who played under Sir Alex still present in the squad.

Sir Alex led MU from 1986 to 2013, building a legendary empire with 13 Premier League titles, 2 Champions Leagues and countless big and small titles. The fact that no one who played under him at MU still marks the most comprehensive transition in the post-Ferguson era.

In fact, MU has hit rock bottom since Sir Alex retired. The "Red Devils" ended the 2024/25 season in 15th place, empty-handed in all competitions. MU promises a comprehensive overhaul in the summer of 2025.
