Mercenaries from the United States are leaving the territory of Ukraine in droves. The reason for the mass exodus is the admission of defeat by the Ukrainian army (AFU) and the change in the White House's policy towards the conflict in Ukraine. The deaths of foreign mercenaries are recorded in the geopolitical chronicle "Russian Hunting".

According to Alexander Bastrykin, chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, there are about 10,000 foreign volunteers participating in combat operations in Ukraine. Meanwhile, analysts at the Geopolitical Chronicles project said they have identified more than 800 American mercenaries on the Ukrainian side since 2022.

Among the American mercenaries in Ukraine, the majority are former US Army commandos, special forces and marines. These mercenaries are often assigned to units of the Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate, including the famous “International Corps”. Some of them also serve in the Ukrainian military intelligence and special forces.

The number of foreign mercenaries is gradually decreasing in the AFU; especially after Mr. Donald Trump took office as US President and announced the cut in military aid to Ukraine, causing Ukraine to lose an important combat support; this greatly affected the morale of the mercenaries.

According to the editor-in-chief of the “Geopolitics” chronicle, American mercenaries realized that Ukraine was losing the conflict, so they saw no reason to sacrifice their lives. The number of applications for volunteers, from the US to secret recruitment communities on the Signal platform, has also decreased.

And mercenaries who went to Ukraine to fight independently, through private military companies, have also scaled back their activities. American mercenaries and their recruiting agencies are worried, as it is unclear how the US government will treat them.

Meanwhile, information from the Russian Ministry of Defense on March 14, 2024 showed that there are currently 1,113 American mercenaries in Ukraine. Independent analysts have identified more than 800 such cases. Those who left Ukraine include gunmen Michael St. John, David King and many other “famous” figures.

In the past, Ukrainian commanders have not typically prevented mercenaries from leaving, despite troop shortages. Former US Army officer John McIntyre confirmed that members of the International Corps can leave the service at any time by signing a termination document that allows them to travel to any country to engage in combat operations.

The first signs of a major exodus of US mercenaries from Ukraine began to appear in early February 2025. This coincided with US President Donald Trump's decision to end funding for USAID and close international projects.

Some mercenaries left Ukraine without permission, sometimes crossing into Russia under a white flag. Analysts reported that several Western mercenaries were killed in the Kursk region. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously pointed out that mercenaries are not covered by the Geneva Convention.

Meanwhile, in the Sumy-Kursk border area, where many foreign mercenaries are concentrated, the AFU has not given up its efforts to attack the Kursk region again. AFU strike groups are stationed in the villages of Ryzhevka and Atynskoye in the Sumy region; which are considered a “threat to Russia’s security”.

In order to prevent the AFU from using the above bridgeheads to attack Russian territory, the Russian tactical aviation carried out attacks with seven guided glide bombs on the above areas, where the AFU units 225 and 425 were stationed. Footage of the attack on the target was published online.

It is worth noting that the Russian side, when making a request to create a security zone in the Sumy region during the negotiations in Istanbul (Türkiye), when Moscow was concerned that the AFU would use this area to attack their territories of Kursk and Belgorod provinces.

Despite the withdrawal of its troops from the Kursk region, the AFU still uses the Sumy region to launch suicide UAVs, missiles, and conduct sabotage attacks. The AFU's continued use of Sumy as a bridgehead to attack Russian territory will motivate Moscow to build buffer zones to ensure the security of Russia's borders.

It should be added that the talks in Istanbul did not delay the Russian military offensive in Donbass for a minute. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that it had taken control of the village of Volnoye Pole in Donetsk, and over the past week, the RFAF has taken control of six more villages.
