Doctors of the Department of Surgery, Saigon Nha Trang General Hospital have just used the thoracic endoscopic surgery method of sympathetic ganglion ablation to successfully perform surgery for some cases of hyperhidrosis of both hands. This is a surgery that brings high efficiency, safety and quick recovery.

Patient NDL (35 years old, Cam Ranh City) has a stable job but is often self-conscious because of excessive sweating in the hands. In particular, when the weather is hot or stressful, the sweat on the hands increases, sometimes dripping and having to use a towel to wipe continuously, because the hands are always wet, causing many limitations in work and daily life for patient L. These days, when the hot weather is increasing and lasting, Mr. L.'s sweaty hands are getting worse. After learning that Saigon Nha Trang General Hospital performs treatment for the above disease, Mr. L. went to the hospital for examination. After being consulted by the hospital's doctor, Mr. L. decided to perform endoscopic surgery to ablate the sympathetic ganglion to completely treat the disease. Ms. PTT (26 years old, Nam Dinh) has hyperhidrosis in both hands. In mid-May, Ms. T. went to Nha Trang City for a vacation and to visit her family. Introduced by her family, Ms. T. went to Saigon Nha Trang General Hospital for examination. After being consulted by the hospital's doctor about the disease and treatment method, on May 25, Ms. T. decided to have surgery. As a result of the surgery, Ms. T.'s hyperhidrosis condition was significantly reduced.

Doctors of Saigon Nha Trang General Hospital burned the patient's sympathetic ganglion.

Specialist II Cao Viet Dung - Professional Director of Saigon Nha Trang General Hospital said that the doctors decided to perform surgery for the patient by endoscopic thoracic surgery to burn the sympathetic ganglion. This surgery has the effect of reducing most of the sweat secreted in the palms and armpits. This is a minimally invasive method with high efficiency, the surgery time is only 30 minutes. Currently, the above method is still a highly effective treatment method for the above disease. In this method, the patient is anesthetized, and each lung is collapsed. The doctors will make 2 small incisions through the skin on each side to insert a camera into the chest, through the camera image, the doctors will cut and burn the thoracic sympathetic ganglion, cutting the reflex arc of the autonomic nervous system. The advantages of this method are that after surgery, the cure rate is high, the hospital stay is short (about 24 hours), the cost is reasonable, the aesthetics are high, and it is quite safe, so it is trusted by many patients.

Although hyperhidrosis of hands and feet does not affect health, it is persistent, causing discomfort in work and daily life. The disease occurs in both adults and children. The symptom is frequent sweating of hands and feet, even in drops, causing discomfort to the patient, sometimes making them embarrassed and lacking confidence in life, especially when having to hold a pen to write or communicate with others. The disease will be worse when there are unexpected emotions such as entering the exam room, participating in a competition, receiving sudden good or bad news...

Dr. Dung shared that increased sweating is the result of hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. Part of this system controls sweat glands, which are located in the chest cavity and run along the spine. There are many causes of sweaty hands such as sympathetic neuropathy, tumors compressing nerves, or metabolic disorders. To completely treat it, patients must use sympathetic ganglionectomy. However, the side effect of this method is that 40% of patients after sympathetic ganglionectomy have compensatory sweating in other parts of the body such as the abdomen, back, chest, etc. After 4 to 6 months, most of these symptoms will stabilize. Although knowing the side effects, patients often accept it because the above method helps them solve communication and work problems.

The successful application of the method of treating hyperhidrosis of the hands by burning the sympathetic ganglion at Saigon Nha Trang General Hospital has contributed to diversifying the treatment methods at the hospital. At the same time, it has contributed to improving health care for people in and outside the province.
