Orientation for sustainable development of durian trees

In recent years, the economic value of durian cultivation has increased, leading to the expansion of acreage in many localities. However, the development of this crop must be calculated so that each durian ensures quality, meets export requirements and has a consumption address.

Instead of increasing the area, farmers in the province change their production thinking, focus on biological care processes, improve product quality, ensure traceability, and aim for safe products. In fact, to do this, the first factor is still the growers' cultivation process.

Biologically oriented care

Mr. Hoang Ngoc Binh (residing in Thien Hung commune, Dong Nai province) has more than 1 hectare of organically grown durian in the business period. Mr. Binh said: In addition to his existing experience, before planting durian, he learned planting and care techniques to apply to cultivation, so the durian garden developed quite well. After being trained and consulting many effective models, Mr. Binh applied science and technology, using biological fertilizers to take care of the garden.

According to Mr. Binh, organic care of durian is not complicated, the most important thing is to improve the soil and increase the amount of decomposed organic fertilizers added periodically. Thanks to the improved soil environment, the strong root system, his family's durian trees have good resistance.

“The durian growing area in Dong Nai province is currently about 20,000 hectares and is also expected to increase. Therefore, we recommend that producers must comply with the process and certification, at least VietGAP or GlobalGAP. Durian growing areas must be assigned a growing area code according to the standards of the importing country. We must continuously improve technology and techniques to ensure quality and that products do not contain pesticide residues.”

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment LE THI ANH TUYET

The durian garden of Mr. Nguyen Quang Vu's family (residing in Dak Nhau commune, Dong Nai province) is mainly cared for with organic fertilizers combined with biological pesticides. With nearly 10 hectares of durian, Mr. Vu applies biological products according to the principle of "nourishing the soil - the soil nourishes the plants".

After a period of applying biological planting methods, Mr. Vu's family's durian garden maintains stable productivity and uniform fruit. Mr. Vu said: When applying organic care, the cost of pesticides is significantly reduced, instead, there is peace of mind when the garden is naturally healthy and the products are safe, meeting market requirements. Not only bringing economic benefits, Mr. Vu's method also contributes to environmental protection, moving towards green agriculture.

“When applying organic care for durian, I see that the trees grow in balance and the fruit quality is better. With this biological solution, although it requires care, the garden is healthy and protects human health,” Mr. Vu added.

Towards sustainable production

In the past, to increase productivity, durian growers relied heavily on chemical fertilizers. However, people have now begun to change their thinking, shifting their focus to biological garden care: increasing organic, reducing chemicals, and respecting the soil ecosystem. Many households have boldly used biological products combined with composted organic fertilizers.

Mr. Phuong Huu Hao (residing in Dak O commune, Dong Nai province) said: “From participating in training sessions on green and clean agricultural production organized by the locality, we have applied it to durian tree care, because this is a sustainable development direction. In fact, investing in durian trees requires high capital and technical factors; therefore, for sustainable development, growers must make efforts to care for and increase organic fertilizers, thereby improving product quality and ensuring traceability.”

Taking care of durian in an organic way not only contributes to prolonging the life of the garden but also gives stable productivity, increasing the rate of meeting export standards. Currently, many gardeners in the province have realized the potential of exporting durian, so they have changed their thinking and changed the production chain. Durian is grown in an organic way, with a methodical care process, meeting export standards, aiming for sustainable development.

Taking care of durian in an organic way is not only a choice but also an inevitable trend for sustainable development. Engineer Do Huu Duc (Agricultural Service Center of Region XV, Dong Nai province) said: "Choosing to grow durian to develop the family economy, growers need to increase care of the tree in a sustainable organic way. When farmers prevent diseases and treat pests on crops, they should limit the use of chemicals, especially those on the banned list; increase the application of environmentally friendly biological products".

In order for durian development to bring economic value as well as raise the level of Vietnamese agricultural products, growers need to fully implement the requirements on care techniques, cultivation, packaging... Because if durian or any agricultural product wants to go far and create a sustainable market, all individuals in the production chain need to join hands and unite for common development.
