Apple's iPhone sales in China fell 0.3% in the third quarter of 2024, and Huawei's strong performance shows increasingly fierce competition in the world's largest market.
According to data released by research firm IDC this morning (October 25), Apple ranked second in smartphone sales in China with a market share of 15.6%, down 0.5 percentage points from a year ago, while rival Huawei ranked third with 15.3%, up 4.2 percentage points.

Apple's iPhone sales in China fell 0.3% in the third quarter of 2024 due to fierce competition from rivals such as Huawei.
Vivo, which mainly sells budget phones, is the top vendor in the world's most populous country with an 18.6% market share.
The mixed results come after Huawei’s return to the high-end phone segment with its Mate 60 series, a smartphone powered by a domestically produced chip. The Chinese tech giant also challenged Apple’s position with its latest Pura 70 model released earlier this year. Huawei had a spectacular quarter, soaring 42% and was the reason for the decline in Apple’s sales, analysts said.
Apple has faced increasing obstacles in China, including policy restrictions on the use of iPhones in some government agencies.
The US tech giant responded with a series of price cuts to boost sales. Third-quarter results were helped somewhat by the launch of the new iPhone 16, which went on sale on September 20. However, that same day, Huawei launched a competing product, a phone that can fold into three.
The new iPhones have had a strong start in China, with sales 20% higher in the first three weeks of their launch than the 2023 models, according to Counterpoint data.
"With its annual new product launches, Apple has returned to the top three smartphone market leaders in China, with a market share of 15.6%. With increased promotions and the launch of Apple Vision Pro, market demand for the iPhone 16 series is expected to gradually improve in the future," IDC assessed.
Overall, China's smartphone shipments in the third quarter increased 3.2% to 68.78 million units.
