On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of writer Doan Gioi's birth (May 17, 1925 - May 17, 2025), a series of discussion and book introduction events will be held in Hanoi and Tien Giang province on May 16-17.
Accordingly, Kim Dong Publishing House introduces to readers nationwide a special book series consisting of 8 typical works of the great writer deeply attached to the nature and people of the South.
Born in 1925 in My Tho, Doan Gioi is one of the pioneer writers who reflects truthfully, emotionally and poetically on the nature, people and history of the South. Through his works, Doan Gioi contributes to Vietnamese literature a unique voice: Simple but profound, full of memoir but also full of talent.

Throughout his career, Doan Gioi has always had a strong love for the Southern region, expressed in every page he writes. He takes readers to the mangrove forests, swamps, the Mekong River, to listen to the wild calls of animals and the lives of the heroic Southern people during the war as well as in daily life.
The works republished this time are the most outstanding works that have contributed to shaping the literary style of Doan Gioi. They are “Southern Forest Land,” “The Search for the Armory,” “The Old Sailor on the Exiled Island,” “Rhinoceros in the Green Forest,” “Strange Stories About Fish,” “Rustling Night Forest,” “Grouper,” and “Sunflowers.”
According to Ms. Vu Thi Quynh Lien, Deputy Director and Editor-in-Chief of Kim Dong Publishing House, the book series is not only a gift of gratitude to writer Doan Gioi but also an invitation for readers to explore the endless beauty of the Southern land.
Ms. Lien said that “Dat rung phuong Nam” was one of the first works published by Kim Dong Publishing House in the first year of its establishment (1957). Over the past nearly 70 years, “Dat rung phuong Nam” has been reprinted many times and has been loved by many generations of readers. The 100th anniversary of the birth of writer Doan Gioi is an occasion to honor a great author, and also an opportunity for us to re-read and spread the literary value of Doan Gioi to young readers today./.
