On the afternoon of May 15, Doctor Huynh Nguyen Duy Liem, Head of the Pediatrics Department, Bac Lieu General Hospital, said that the Pediatrics Department had received and was treating four children aged 5-9, from Vinh Trach Dong Commune, Bac Lieu City, who were poisoned by eating rat poison. The children were hospitalized with nausea and dizziness.
Immediately after admission, the doctors examined, diagnosed, and cleaned the children's stomachs. Thanks to timely emergency care, the children's condition has stabilized. The children are being monitored and actively treated by the doctors.
Ms. Ly Thi Tha, living in Vinh Trach Dong commune, Bac Lieu city, is the grandmother of 3 out of 4 children poisoned by rat poison. She said: The parents of the children all work far away, so they left their children with their grandmother. Every day, she sells fish at the market to earn money to make ends meet. After school, the children often come to her shop to play. While playing, the children ate instant noodles mixed with rat poison used by a nearby vendor to trap rats.
Upon discovering the incident, the family immediately performed first aid and took the children to Vinh Trach Dong Commune Medical Center, then to the Pediatrics Department, Bac Lieu General Hospital for treatment.
According to Dr. Huynh Nguyen Duy Liem, rat poison contains extremely toxic active ingredients. Even a small amount can cause serious poisoning, even life-threatening if not treated promptly.
Children are very curious and easily confuse chemicals with food, so adults need to be especially careful in storing and using toxic drugs in the home or business to avoid unfortunate accidents.
Providing first aid on the spot and quickly taking the patient to the nearest medical facility is extremely important. Because after just a few hours of exposure, the toxin can enter the body through the intestines, causing extremely serious, life-threatening consequences. Fortunately, the 4 cases of children brought to the hospital due to rat poison poisoning were treated effectively from the beginning, helping to prevent dangerous complications.
Doctor Huynh Nguyen Duy Liem recommends that parents and caregivers pay special attention to the care and preservation of dangerous objects and chemicals; at the same time, when an incident occurs, it is necessary to calmly perform first aid properly and quickly take the child to a medical facility for treatment as soon as possible to prevent serious consequences./.
