Diagnosed with cancer at 22

Recently, the image of a girl holding a test paper, sitting absent-mindedly in the hospital hallway was widely shared on social networks. According to information posted online, after receiving the results of her stage 3 leukemia, this girl collapsed, sat there sobbing, her hands shaking.

Speaking with Dan Tri newspaper reporters , Master, Doctor Nguyen Duy Anh, working in the oncology department of a large hospital in Hanoi, confirmed that this was a patient he personally examined.

According to Dr. Duy Anh, the female patient is 22 years old and has just graduated from university. Since the Lunar New Year, the patient has been experiencing prolonged fatigue. However, she thought this was just a consequence of having just switched from studying to working.

Another unusual symptom that prompted her to seek medical attention was irregular periods.

"Initially, the patient went to the obstetrician. However, when the blood test results returned abnormal, the patient was instructed to transfer to the oncology department for more in-depth examination," said Dr. Duy Anh.

Here, Dr. Duy Anh ordered the patient to have a blood test, the results were normal but an abdominal ultrasound showed a suspicious mass in the retroperitoneal space.

"At this time, he was very worried. I encouraged the patient to have a CT scan of the chest and abdomen, which showed lymph nodes in the retroperitoneal cavity next to the lumbar spine.

The patient also had some abnormal lymph nodes in the chest cavity. Abdominal lymph node biopsy was performed and the result was non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

After we concluded the patient's condition, he collapsed. This is understandable when a very young person learns he has cancer," Dr. Duy Anh shared.

When he noticed that the patient had signs of psychological instability, Dr. Duy Anh asked for help from the psychological counseling department and female nurses.

"The patient was taken to the psychological counseling room. Here, a female nurse and a female doctor encouraged and reassured the patient. After gradually stabilizing, the patient called her family to inform them of her condition," said Dr. Duy Anh.

About 2 days later, the patient returned to the hospital with his family to receive treatment advice.

According to Dr. Duy Anh, with the current condition, the indicated treatment is chemotherapy. In addition, the patient will most likely need a bone marrow transplant from a suitable donor.

After treatment, patients will also need genetic testing to predict the risk of future recurrence.

Warning signs of leukemia

"With the development of modern medicine, the 5-year survival rate of leukemia patients can be up to 80%, while previously it was only about 50-60%," said Dr. Duy Anh.

In fact, there have been many patients with leukemia who have been treated stably and returned to normal life, study and work. Many of them have started families and given birth to healthy children.

"In addition to early detection, proper treatment, and compliance with doctor's instructions are important factors in curing leukemia. Therefore, you should absolutely not abandon treatment to follow word-of-mouth methods such as macrobiotics or traditional medicine, causing you to miss the 'golden period' of treatment," Dr. Duy Anh emphasized.

The symptoms of leukemia are often atypical. However, if you notice signs such as: prolonged fever of unknown origin, excessive sweating at night, bruising on the skin, nosebleeds or rash of unknown origin... you should go to the doctor to be screened for the risk of leukemia.
