Medical examination and treatment during floods

The road leading to the old Phu Luong lowland (now Phu Ho commune) is still flooded. The barrier has been opened, proving that this route has been cleared and is safe. However, people in the lowest villages still have to travel by motorboat. The water level is slowly decreasing, and it is still raining. In this weather, most people in the lowland areas are still at home. Only going to the health station for examination and treatment is the top priority for people.

At 10am, at Phu Ho Medical Station 3, the water was still low. Many elderly patients were waiting for their turn to be examined. Doctor Pham Tang Duyet, Deputy Head of Phu Ho Medical Station 3, listened attentively to the "medical reports" and carefully examined each person. Yesterday, the water rose high, almost reaching the porch, but the medical examination and treatment activities were still ensured to be continuous, normal, and safe. That was the direction of the city's health sector; the leadership of Phu Vang Medical Center, and also the responsibility of the doctors in the flood-prone area. In any natural disaster situation, we must do our best to ensure the health of the people.

On rainy and flood days, medical staff still ensure medical examination and treatment for people in flooded areas.

“I have a tumor, severe vestibular disorder and many other diseases. The water is still flooded, making it difficult to move around, but I was so tired that this morning I called Dr. Duyet. The doctor said: My colleagues and I have been on duty here for four days in a row. We are on duty every day, the station is always ready to receive patients 24/7, so you can rest assured. Now if you are too tired, let my brothers and sisters come to your house to take you to the station. But the doctors and nurses are also concerned about the health of the people in this area, I am not the only one in pain, so I use a cane and ask to ride on someone else's boat. During storms and floods like this, the doctors and nurses are even more dedicated, especially to the elderly and the lonely. During the big flood last year, when I became ill, the government used a motorboat to take Dr. Duyet to my house to examine and give medicine. Mr. Nguyen Tu and many elderly patients in the low-lying areas were also examined and treated by the station's doctors and nurses in the midst of the flood. It is very reassuring and heartwarming” - Mrs. Nhan said with a smile that warmed our hearts.

Prepare for epidemic prevention after the flood recedes

According to Dr. Pham Tang Duyet, before hearing the news of storm No. 12 making landfall, the Director of Phu Vang Medical Center directed Phu Ho Medical Station, Facility 3, to develop scenarios and plans to prevent floods in low-lying areas. Before the storm, the station staff made a list of pregnant women scheduled to give birth this time, and together with midwives, went to each village and each house to encourage pregnant women to come to Phu Vang Medical Center to ensure safe childbirth. In close coordination with local authorities, in case an emergency patient cannot come to the station, a specialized canoe will be used to transfer the patient to the medical station, or to Phu Vang Medical Center for treatment.

Yesterday, when many places in Phu Ho area were flooded up to 1.2 meters, Phu Ho Medical Station 3 was the first "address" where Chairman of Phu Ho Commune People's Committee, Mr. Nguyen Van Chinh and Dr. Nguyen Minh Hung, Director of Phu Vang Medical Center and Director of the Department of Health visited and encouraged the medical staff and doctors who were on duty day and night, ready to examine and treat people in the flood.

Giving gifts and love to the people of Com hamlet

Come to Com village in the middle of the vast water

Leaving Phu Ho Medical Station 3, we went to Phu Ho Commune Police Headquarters, the core force in the area, accompanying, supporting and helping people during storm and flood seasons. At this time, they were preparing to visit and assess the situation of 8 households in vulnerable areas - Com hamlet, Khe Xa village, Vinh Luong Khe cluster. The dirt road to Com hamlet was currently impossible, and we could only travel by motorboat. Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Viet Minh Trung, Major Huynh Xuan Hai and the head of the security and order protection team in Le Xa village, Ho Viet Hoai, were fully equipped with life jackets, raincoats and boxes of instant noodles to provide more supplies to the people.

Phu Ho commune police crossed the flood to reach the people of Com hamlet

The gentle rice fields during harvest season have now become vast rivers, the water flowing over the concrete road; in many places the depth is 2-2.5 meters. The motorboat sped through the increasingly heavy rain. “The water in this area recedes very slowly. It is still raining, the water recedes even slower. But having lived in the flood zone for decades, the people are familiar with and proactively comply with storm and flood prevention. We also regularly update the situation to have the most timely rescue and support” - Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Viet Minh Trung shared.

After nearly 30 minutes of "waterway", Com hamlet with adjacent houses huddled together, appeared in the heavy rain.

Flood victims proactively ensure their daily lives during floods.

Receiving the gift, which was a box of instant noodles along with the affection and care from the police officers , Ms. Vo Thi Suong, Ms. Tran Thi Quyt, and Mr. Tran Mai were moved. “We have prepared enough rice, fish sauce, salt, and essential items in case of power outage. Now, with the high-rise building that my brother is building, my neighborhood can rest assured to take shelter. We feel more secure because during the rainy and flooded days, officers visit almost every day to check on the situation of the people,” Mr. Mai said.

As I write these lines, it is still raining incessantly. The water will still slowly recede in the Phu Ho floodplain, but the people here have been accustomed to floods for generations and have adapted to the environment. Rest assured because the government and functional forces are always there to support and share, the people of Phu Ho have prepared themselves for a new season of labor and production when the flood recedes.
