A Chinese woman who just gave birth to a son by caesarean section has been asked by her husband to take a paternity test because of the baby's unusually dark skin.
A 33-year-old woman from Shanghai, China, who did not reveal her identity, said that the happiest day of her life turned into a nightmare when her husband asked for a paternity test because her newborn son's skin was dark and looked different from everyone else in the family.
The woman herself also found the child's dark skin strange, but she claimed that she "had never been to Africa and did not know any black people".
The moment she met her son, the husband just stared at the baby with strange eyes and refused to hold him. He then asked for a paternity test to prove that the child was his. The young woman agreed, but although she knew the test would clear things up, she still felt unfairly treated by her husband and said that the trust between them had been broken.
The woman's Weibo post went viral and many people were quick to assure her that the baby's dark skin tone was completely normal.
According to one expert, a newborn's skin tissue is thin and blood circulation is poor, so the skin may temporarily appear dark red naturally. The color usually gradually changes to a lighter shade over time.
Regarding this issue, Dr. Zhang Jiaming, Director of the Department of Neonatal Genetics at Taipei General Hospital (Taiwan, China) affirmed that Chinese parents can give birth to black children, but this case is extremely rare.
“Both parents carry the recessive melanin gene, causing the child to have dark skin. Due to a gene mutation during the formation of the fertilized egg, some of the baby’s physiological characteristics will be abnormal, including skin color. This case is rare but can still happen,” said Dr. Zhang Jiaming.
Others were more concerned about the husband's attitude and his lack of trust in the young mother, advising her to have a frank talk about their relationship after the paternity test results came back.
