The Sustainable Tourism 2025 Survey by the Agoda Digital Travel Platform (Agoda) has just announced a list of countries with the highest interest in sustainable tourism, in which Vietnam is in the top 5 regions. Reality also shows that tourists are increasingly moving towards authentic tourism, experiencing local culture and green tourism...

Recently, in some localities with tourism potential, such as Ho Chi Minh City, community tours, tours combining tree planting, cycling experiences, cleaning up the environment... have been organized more and more. In Hoi An city (Quang Nam province), kayaking tours combined with garbage collection on the Hoai River have long attracted a lot of tourists, many of whom said they were extremely interested in participating in this tour. Models like this are also very successful in Sa Pa (Lao Cai), Co To (Quang Ninh), Hue...

Recently, the Hanoi Department of Tourism in collaboration with the Hanoi Unesco Travel Club organized a survey program, linked tourism development cooperation and launched a campaign to protect the sustainable tourism environment in Duong Lam ancient village (Hanoi). This activity aims to turn Duong Lam ancient village into a green, environmentally friendly destination, thereby raising awareness of environmental protection, preserving landscapes and cultural identity for the younger generation and tourists; at the same time, opening up opportunities to link to develop sustainable cultural and ecological tourism products.

Sharing with reporters, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan - Director of the Institute for Tourism Development Research said that the trend of sustainable tourism and green tourism has appeared in recent years, but by 2025 this trend will become more and more evident.

However, Mr. Tuan said that many people still think that green tourism is about returning to green nature, but that is not enough. Green tourism is tourism that protects the environment. Instead of consuming natural resources and causing damage to the environment, green tourism focuses on protecting and reducing negative impacts on the natural environment. The second is responsibility for nature and indigenous culture. Typically, ecotourism, which is tourism based on nature and indigenous culture, contributes to conservation and sustainable development, with active participation of the community.

"Therefore, more and more people are interested in green tourism and sustainable tourism, which are very encouraging signs," said Mr. Tuan.

Sharing the same view, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Trung Luong - former Deputy Director of the Institute of Tourism Research said that Vietnam has great potential in developing green tourism and sustainable tourism associated with cultural experiences. However, for this trend to truly develop sustainably, it is necessary to first have a correct understanding of green tourism, because currently, many people are still vague about this concept.

Developing green tourism requires respect for nature, exploiting resources economically and reasonably, and focusing on environmentally friendly forms of tourism, especially ecotourism. One of the biggest challenges today is awareness from both tourism professionals and tourists.

Many tourists are only interested in satisfying their personal needs without considering their impact on the environment and local culture. This can lead to the commercialization of cultural values, distorting traditional identities. For example, Sa Pa used to be an attractive destination because of its unique cultural beauty, but has gradually been affected by uncontrolled tourism development, causing the local cultural identity to fade away.

Therefore, according to Mr. Luong, for green tourism to develop sustainably, both supply and demand need to coordinate harmoniously, not only to protect nature but also to preserve indigenous cultural values. In addition, there needs to be specific policies and resources to support conservation work. In addition, human resources are also a major bottleneck in the development of Vietnam's tourism in general and green tourism associated with cultural experiences in particular. Improving the quality of human resources, providing proper training and raising awareness are key factors to help Vietnam's tourism industry develop sustainably in the future.
