Efforts to improve productivity

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Tu - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Duc Co district - said: Currently, the whole district has about 25 thousand hectares of cashew. Many cashew areas are grown on sloping land, lacking irrigation water, combined with the fact that people mainly use old cashew varieties and invest little in fertilizers and pesticides, so the yield is low, averaging only 800 kg to 1 ton of nuts/ha.

Faced with the above situation, in 2023, the district implemented the project "Improving productivity and value of cashew trees in Duc Co district by 2030". To implement the project, each year, the district allocates more than 1 billion VND to support people with agricultural materials and cashew cultivation techniques according to VietGAP on an area of 100 hectares of available cashew trees. As a result, after 3 years, the average cashew yield of households participating in the project reached over 1.2 tons/ha, 2 quintals higher than before.

Mr. Luu Van Thanh - Vice Chairman of Ia Lang Commune People's Committee - said: The whole commune has nearly 1,440 hectares of cashew. After implementing the project, the commune has 182 households participating with an area of 96 hectares. Thanks to support with fertilizers and technical guidance on care according to VietGAP, the average cashew yield of households reached over 1.2 tons/ha, 2-3 quintals higher than households not participating in the project.

Ms. Ro Lan Lieu (Gao village, Ia Lang commune) happily said: My family has 5 sao of cashew, previously we harvested less than 500 kg/year. In 2024, the commune supported us with 400 kg of various fertilizers, our family took care of the fertilization and boldly invested in pesticides to treat pests. Therefore, despite the prolonged cold weather and heavy frost, the fruit set rate of the cashew garden is still high. This crop, my family harvested more than 600 kg.

Building a product consumption chain

In addition to improving cashew productivity, Duc Co district also builds production and consumption chains for cashew products and builds OCOP certification for cashew processed products. Up to now, the district has built 4 production and consumption chains for cashew; 2 households with cashew processed products have been certified with 3-star OCOP.

“Through these chains, 4,184 hectares of cashew trees owned by local people have been instructed by enterprises and cooperatives on VietGAP and organic care techniques to increase product value. Of these, 4,000 hectares have been certified organic, 175 hectares are being cared for according to VietGAP (not yet certified), and all products are stably consumed. In addition, cashew processing households with OCOP certified products also actively participate in consuming raw cashew nuts for cashew growers in the district,” Mr. Tu added.

Mr. Tran Dinh Ha - Director of BDB Cao Nguyen Science, Technology and Environmental Services Co., Ltd. (Hoa Lu Ward, Pleiku City) informed: The company is currently cooperating with 182 households in Ia Lang Commune to grow and consume cashew products. Since implementing the linkage chain, the company has coordinated with the locality to provide fertilizer according to the district's support standards; sent technical staff to guide people in taking care of cashews according to VietGAP. At the same time, it supports the purchase of products for households at market prices. In particular, this year, the purchase price of cashews is higher than last year, so people have achieved good profits.

Similarly, Ms. Phi Thi Nu (Ia Lam Tok village, Ia Krel commune) shared: With the support of the district, up to now, my family has had 2 cashew products certified with 3-star OCOP. Along with that, the district also supports promotion so that the products are consumed more conveniently. Currently, each year, my family consumes nearly 200 tons of raw cashew nuts for local people. In the coming time, I will continue to build OCOP certification for the product of Whole Flavor Dried Cashew Nuts; at the same time, bring the product to the market of Binh Phuoc province for consumption.

Speaking with reporters, the Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Duc Co district emphasized: In reality, many households have not invested in irrigation water and fertilizers, so cashew productivity is still low.

In the coming time, the district will encourage households to convert cashew areas that lack irrigation water and are old to grow crops that are suitable for the climate and soil and have high economic value. At the same time, the district will continue to maintain the project to support people with materials, techniques and product consumption for the remaining cashew areas.

“In the future, when the district level is dissolved, this project will continue to be maintained by implementing it at the commune level. Thereby, it will help cashew growers increase productivity and improve income,” Mr. Tu affirmed.
