Don't enter your iPhone password in public

The iPhone password is defaulted by a 4 or 6 digit sequence specified by the user during the device setup process. In addition, Apple also provides device owners with additional, more convenient and secure backup security technologies such as Face ID or Touch ID, but many people still keep the habit of entering numbers manually.

According to a recent report from two WSJ journalists, this practice poses a security risk if users lose their phones in public places. In many cases surveyed by the investigation team, victims confirmed that they lost their phones in crowded places such as bars or public places at night.

Specifically, the criminals identify their "prey" by monitoring their movements and secretly observing the password entered into the phone when the victim uses it in a crowded place. Once they know the password, they perform tricks to steal the phone from the owner.

Knowing both the password and having the device in hand gives the thief access to the device's contents, reset security methods, and can even take control of the Apple ID account on the device, making it impossible for the victim to log in to report the device lock or erase data.

Instead of entering a password, use Face ID or Touch ID in public to keep your data safe.

To do this, the thief will take advantage of the recovery key feature on the iPhone. This is a security tool consisting of a random 28-character string created by Apple to increase control for the owner of the Apple ID. However, once the code is successfully generated, no one can access the ID without this code, including the owner of the device and the account. After preventing the user from accessing the Apple ID, the thief can freely access the information on the device, including sensitive data such as contacts, messages, emails, photos, videos or financial and banking applications.

Therefore, experts recommend that users do not enter passwords manually in public places, try to use biometric login methods (Face ID, Touch ID fingerprint sensor...) in all possible situations. If forced to enter a password, use your hand or other body part to cover the screen during the operation.

In addition, users can increase the complexity of the password, instead of just using 4-6 simple digits, choose to enter a combination of numbers and letters. To change the password format, on iPhone users follow the path below: Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Change Passcode > Passcode Options > Custom Alphanumeric Code. This option makes the character string more complex and difficult to observe and remember.
