De Gea may return to MU soon |
MU are quietly making inquiries about a possible surprise reunion with the club's legendary goalkeeper - David de Gea. The "Red Devils" received news that the 34-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has a release clause in his contract with Fiorentina, allowing him to leave for a relatively small fee.
The discreet calls were made after De Gea made a strong impression on his return to Old Trafford last weekend. During the 1-1 friendly draw between United and Fiorentina, De Gea was presented with a commemorative painting by Bruno Fernandes.
The goalkeeper later posted on Instagram: “A magical moment for me and my family to be back at Old Trafford - my home. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the welcome, for all the love you have shown me. To the fans who have never stopped supporting me during my time at the club - maybe we will meet again.”
Between 2011 and 2023, De Gea made 545 appearances for United, ranking seventh in the club's all-time appearances list. But his poor form and contract dispute saw him leave the club, with then-manager Erik ten Hag spending £43.8m to sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan.
De Gea was unemployed for the entire 2023/24 season, but at Fiorentina he has regained his form and desire to play. In theory, MU needs Onana (29 years old) or Turkish reserve goalkeeper Altay Bayindir to leave to free up the wage bill. However, if the fee for De Gea is cheap enough, the club can still consider the option of bringing him back.
Ahead of the opening match against Arsenal, which will take place at 10:30 p.m. on August 17, coach Ruben Amorim still kept Onana waiting anxiously by refusing to confirm that he would be the number one goalkeeper this season. Amorim said: “Like other players, everyone has to compete for a position. I will not say who is number one.”
