Before 2007, oyster farming in Vietnam was almost non-existent. Currently, Vietnam produces more than 15,000 tons of oysters each year. The demand for oysters for the domestic market is increasing rapidly and the export potential is increasingly strong.
Taiwan and Laos are key consumer markets for Vietnamese oysters.
On July 21, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , the leader of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) admitted that in the first half of 2024, oyster exports grew strongly, continuing the breakthrough growth momentum of 2023.
“In 2023, Vietnamese oyster exports made a breakthrough. In nearly half a year, Vietnam's oyster export value reached nearly 7 million USD, an increase of 31% over the same period in 2023. Oyster products, especially fresh and frozen oysters from Vietnam, have been exported to more than 10 markets around the world , mainly countries in the Asian region,” he informed.
According to VASEP statistics, the markets that “like” eating Vietnamese oysters the most are Taiwan and Laos. In addition, in the top 10 markets, there are also China and Cambodia with breakthrough growth.
Explaining the reason, Mr. Do Anh Tuan (a seafood business in Hai Phong ) said: "In recent years, Vietnamese oysters have been of very high quality, clean due to investment in farming technology; the price is reasonable for foreign customers so they are popular. The place where oysters are raised in large quantities and are delicious is the sea area of Quang Ninh".
Many Vietnamese people are "crazy" about foreign oysters after trying them once.
Currently, in the market as well as on social networks, there are many imported French and Japanese oysters in Vietnam. Many Vietnamese people share that they are "fascinated" by foreign oysters after trying them once.

“I saw oysters for sale online, my husband said I should buy some to try. I bought 580,000 VND/kg of Japanese oysters. The oysters were grilled with cheese and were very delicious and fatty. I ate foreign oysters once but still crave them,” said Ms. Ha Thi Xuan (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City).
Based on the psychology of buying to try, according to many importers, despite the high price, in addition to salmon, king crab, trumpet snail, shrimp... oysters are also a product imported a lot to Vietnam. The common price is from 500,000 - 1 million VND/kg.
On social networks, many personal pages advertise cheap imported oysters for sale at prices ranging from 400,000 - 800,000 VND/kg, attracting many people's attention and comments asking for the price of buying oysters.
Vietnamese oyster exports in nearly half of 2024 increased by more than 31%
According to VASEP, in nearly half of 2024, Vietnam's oyster export value increased by 52%. Cumulatively, Vietnam's oyster export value reached more than 7 million USD, an increase of more than 31% over the same period in 2023.
Taiwan is the main consumer market for Vietnamese oysters, accounting for 82% in the first 5 months of this year. The second largest market is Laos, which tripled compared to the same period in 2023, reaching more than 713,000 USD.
Previously, in 2023, Vietnamese oyster exports were mainly fresh and chilled oysters, reaching over 14 million USD, an increase of 56% compared to 2022. Of which, the Taiwanese market alone consumed over 77% of Vietnam's oyster exports with a value of nearly 11 million USD, an increase of 26% compared to 2022. In addition, Vietnam also exports fresh and chilled oysters to Laos, Cambodia, Japan, etc.
In addition to oysters, clams and snails also saw significant growth in some markets.
