Telling the story of Vietnamese women in a difficult situation and how the female lead chooses to face that problem, the female director hopes the film will reach many audiences and evoke interesting conversations.
Returning from the 2024 Venice Film Festival with an award for best film and an award for most creative film, Duong Dieu Linh and the film crew of "Rain on the Butterfly Wings" are on a film promotion (cinetour) in Hanoi before the premiere.
“Don’t Cry Butterfly” tells the ironic story of a middle-aged housewife named Tam (Tu Oanh), whose husband is having an affair and is caught on live television. But instead of having a direct conversation, Tam seeks out a shaman to perform a spell to bring her husband back.
The film blends drama, comedy and a bit of horror to recreate the character's interesting and colorful emotional journey. For Duong Dieu Linh, the topic of women's thoughts in modern society, especially middle-aged women, has always attracted and fascinated her since the early days of pursuing a film career.
With such a social theme, the 9X director always keeps in mind his greatest wish and joy is to truly touch the emotions of the audience.
“Many people think that art and commercial films are two things that cannot be reconciled, that making films like this is just for the sake of entering an award, but that is not the case. Artists always want to touch the hearts of as many people as possible, not just the hearts of a few judges. People may think, 'Since I won an award, whatever I say is wrong,' but really, for me, the award at Venice is not as important as being able to sit and watch the film with audiences in many other places around the world . Audiences in each place have different reactions to films and I am very happy to hear them share their feelings and tell their own stories after watching the film,” Dieu Linh expressed.
The female lead Tu Oanh shared that this was her first time playing a leading role, and it was a movie. She felt nervous but also excited.
She said she always supports the young crew and has many things in common with Dieu Linh from a female perspective. The actress hopes to be loved and shared by the audience when the film is officially released in theaters from January 3, 2025.
At 97 minutes long, Screen Daily called the film a “mixed but energetic affair.” Asian Movie Pulse wrote that the film still had some issues, but that they were mainly due to a lack of experience making a feature film rather than a lack of skill. Overall, “this is a promising debut.”
“Rain on the Butterfly Wings” is Duong Dieu Linh’s first feature film. She previously made three short films , “Au O,” “Mother, Daughter and Dreams,” “Sweet, Salty,” and “Heaven Calls Name.” All revolve around inspiration about Vietnamese women.
"Sweet, Salty" marked the first time Duong Dieu Linh collaborated with actress Tu Oanh. The work helped define the style of expression in later feature films, and also won an award for young director at the Singapore Film Festival in 2019. "Thien Duong Goi Ten" won the award for short film at the Locarno Film Festival (Switzerland) in 2020./.
