North-South railway paralyzed by floods, Ministry of Construction issues urgent dispatch

Faced with historic floods in Khanh Hoa, Dak Lak and Gia Lai, the Ministry of Construction has asked all forces to be on standby, to divert traffic from afar and not to let people enter dangerous areas. The North-South railway has been paralyzed for many days, with 41 trains forced to stop operating.

According to Vietnam Railways Corporation ( VNR ), today (November 22), on the main North-South axis, trains SE4 and SE2 from Saigon station can only run to Da Nang; in the opposite direction, trains SE3 and SE1 departing from Hanoi today are also forced to end their journey in Da Nang. From here, the railway industry will rearrange the train to continue running to Hanoi, ensuring the maintenance of minimum traffic flow.

Many other routes such as SNT1, SNT2 or trains SE5, SE6, SE7, SE8, SE21, SE22 will also have to temporarily stop running today and tomorrow (November 23).

Since November 17, 41 passenger trains have been suspended due to floods. More than 17,500 tickets have been returned by passengers, with a total value of about 12.4 billion VND, and the railway industry has provided free meals worth more than 500 million VND to those stranded.

On November 21st alone, when the road was ready for traffic, nearly 300 passengers of trains SE2 and SE4 who had been stuck for three days at Tuy Hoa station were transferred by car to Dieu Tri station to continue their journey. This morning, 22 passengers of train SNT2 were also safely transported from Thap Cham station to Nha Trang station.

While the railway is trying to fix the problem, landslides and deep flooding on the roads continue to be complicated. According to statistics from the Vietnam Road Administration, as of 10am today, in the Central region, there are still 17 traffic jams on national highways.

Dozens of landslides in Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong and Gia Lai continue to cause local isolation. Particularly on National Highway 7C (Khanh Le Pass), many sections of positive and negative slopes were destroyed, forcing the local authorities to close the road from November 17, and at the same time organize traffic flow along National Highway 1 - National Highway 27 or National Highway 26 to go to Da Lat.

Faced with the situation of exceptionally heavy rain and floods, the Ministry of Construction has issued a dispatch requesting forces to increase their on-duty presence, remote traffic diversion, and set up barriers and warnings at all flooded areas, overflowing culverts, and areas at risk of landslides.

Road management agencies are assigned to proactively regulate traffic, absolutely not allowing people and vehicles to enter dangerous areas. Also according to the directive, railway patrols must be tightened, especially in the Ba and Kon river basins and the Khanh Hoa area - where floods have exceeded historic levels.

In addition to ensuring smooth traffic, the Ministry of Construction requires units to prepare adequate materials and means to respond, and coordinate the supply of necessities for passengers forced to stay at railway stations due to congestion. Bus station and road transport management units must also continuously update weather developments and proactively plan transportation when necessary.
