The quarter-final football match between Alianza and FAS at the Cuscatlan stadium in the capital San Salvador (El Salvador) was postponed while rescue workers evacuated people from the stadium after a stampede left nine people dead and dozens injured.
Security forces were deployed to the scene of the incident.
The incident occurred as fans jostled to enter the stadium to watch the quarter-final match. Around the 16th minute of the match, the stands began to be in chaos as injured people were carried to the sidelines.
Interior Minister Juan Carlos Bidegain said civil defense rapid response teams were at the scene and assisting those affected. Hundreds of police and soldiers were also at the stadium, along with several ambulances.
Health Minister Francisco Alabi said El Salvador's hospital network was providing medical assistance to all victims of the incident.
El Salvador authorities will increase security following the incident. The increased security presence could lead to localized traffic and business disruptions around the stadium until early May 21 (local time).
The tragedy comes just seven months after 135 people, including more than 40 children, were killed in a stampede after a football match in Malang, Indonesia.
