Artist Bien Thuy and Meritorious Artist Ngoc Doi in the play "The burden of grass on the Han River"
In the context of the reformed theater that is eager to find a new breeze to adapt to the contemporary art trend, the play "Ganh co song Han" - a new production by director NSUT Hoa Ha on WE Stage, under the support of producer Hoang Song Viet - has proven one thing: traditional reformed theater is never out of date when invested carefully and infused with a creative spirit.

On the morning of June 21, the play "Ganh co song Han" had a review performance and received praise from the Arts Council of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City. The play is one of the outstanding scripts of the late playwright Thu An - famous for her writing style of "poetry, song, dance, music, drama, reformed opera" with strong lyrical colors and strong Vietnamese identity on the Huong Mua Thu stage before 1975.
The play is set in a horse training camp during the Lam Son uprising of national hero Le Loi, where seemingly ordinary people – like the grass-cutting girl Oanh Kieu – shoulder extraordinary missions: saving the nation, preserving dignity and loyalty.

There, patriotism blends with family tragedy, where loyalty confronts betrayal, where war horses are not just tools, but living symbols of spirit, loyalty and patriotism. When Tran Dinh - the son of Tran Lao Gia - betrayed his homeland in exchange for glory, it was also the time when Oanh Kieu - the little girl on the banks of the Han River - rose to become a female warrior, daring to sneak into the enemy camp, rescue Bach Long Phi, convert the traitor and rekindle faith in justice.

Director Hoa Ha's mark - Connecting tradition with modernity
Director Meritorious Artist Hoa Ha has breathed new life into "The Grass of the Han River". Still keeping the lyrical spirit of the original, Hoa Ha has created a meticulous production from music , choreography to stage design, costumes, and lighting. Not colorful and confusing, but every detail shows the meticulousness, elegance, and respect for the work.

In particular, the important highlight is the director's companionship and guidance with the young actors - something that socialized theaters often consider risky. But director Hoa Ha turned that challenge into an opportunity by awakening the performing potential of young artists, helping them not only recreate the characters but also truly live with each fate.
New cast has a chance to hone their skills
With Meritorious Artist Ngoc Doi in the role of Oanh Kieu, the audience not only witnessed a mature singing voice, but also saw the inner depth, perseverance and determination of a female warrior in a heroic historical context. She transformed the character from a gentle horse trainer into a woman ready to rush into battle - a transformation that was not easy to portray, especially when Oanh Kieu pretended to be crazy to enter the enemy camp alone and Ngoc Doi filled the character's emotions with her genuine performance.
Artist Minh Truong in the role of Tran Dinh brought a villain with depth - not just a simple traitor, but a man torn between fame and regret.
The choreography and martial arts are beautifully staged, creating a new mark for the play "Han River Grass Carrying"
The young cast such as Bien Thuy, Ly Trung Cuong, Khanh Du, Thanh Thuan, Nha Thy, Trong Hieu, Hoang Chuong, Pham Vu Thanh… also clearly showed their efforts in each performance. Although some psychological changes lacked depth, the promise of resilience in the following performances is highly appreciated by experts.
A notable highlight is the appearance of Meritorious Artist Bao Tri in the role of Dinh Ma Du - a villain but portrayed with charming wit, creating a gentle, subtle atmosphere amidst tense scenes. Artist Trong Hieu in the role of Tran Lao Gia acted very emotionally, showing that he is increasingly mature in his acting.
The fact that WE Stage – a socialized unit associated with variety and music shows – chose to invest in reformed opera is a brave move. The "sponsorship" from producer Hoang Song Viet has shown that reformed opera lovers have placed their trust in the young generation of actors, so that together they can preserve the value of traditional art. Tonight (June 21), the play will be performed at Tran Huu Trang Theater.
